Montreal Open 2015
16-19 Mar, Canada, $5k
19-Mar, Final:
Marie wins all-French final,
and a first WSA title

Yvon Provencal reports

Smaller pro events can often be interesting. Players in the draw range from veterans with a ranking that is slipping, to players trying to get valuable ranking points to younger players just starting their career.

The Montreal Open had all of those and the final had two unexpected players in the final.

Unseeded Melissa Alves upset the 6th, 5th and second seed. She has played less than 10 WSA events and this is her first event in the last two years.

After a successful junior career Eighth seed Marie Stéphan was in her first WSA event, and upset the 3rd and 1st seeds en route to the final.

Marie Stephan 3-2 Melissa Alves
          10-12, 11-6, 4-11, 11-7, 12-10 (62m)

18-Mar, Semis:
It's an all-French final in Montreal

Yvon Provencal reports

Vive la France (et Montréal)

Marie Stephan moved to Philadelphia at University of Pennsylvania ... and is getting used to life in North America. But she is finding out that Montreal is quite special and has a European vibe quite different than other cities on this side of the ocean.

I am not sure if it's what is making her comfortable but she keeps on winning. Always calm, she was able to keep top seed Hollie Naughton on court long enough to benefit from her mistakes. She also played the important points well and prevailed in a long five game match.

17-Mar, Quarters:
Marathon quarters in Montreal

Three of the four quarter-finals went to five games, with Hollie Naughton and Nayelly Hernandez going through despite losing two game leads, and Melissa Alves coming from two games down to win.

Yvon Provencal reports

As much as the matches were straightforward in the first round, all the quarter finals were tight encounters.

The all Canadian match attracted the largest crowd with local player Alex Norman in action. Hollie Naughton started strong and dominated the first two games, controlling the pace and attacking at the right times. It had the look of a solid 3-0 but Alex played some solid squash to take the hird and Holly lost her composure in the fourth. So it came down to the deciding fifth, Hollie got her concentration back and started with some strong rallies, she never looked back and took it quickly.

16-Mar, Round One:
Norman the sole home survivor

The fifth edition of the Montreal Open got under way with first round matches. There were five local players in action and Quebec's top ranked player and ex WSA member Alexandra Norman is the only one that prevailed. She will face top seed Holly Naughton in an all Canadian quarter-final match up.

I would like to thank the city of Montreal, the Quebec Ministry of Sport and club Sportif MAA who make this tournament possible every year.
