Hampton Squash Week 2013
08-11 Aug, Southampton, NY, USA, $10k
Sobhy stands up to Egyptian tide

11-Aug, FINAL:

[1] Amanda Sobhy
(Usa) 3-0 [Q] Yathreb Adel  (Egy)
          11/2, 11/5, 11/3

Looking at the draw for the Hampton Squash Week, a WSA $10k event in Southampton, New York, the thing that immediately struck you was the amount of young Egyptian players involved.

Considering that Egypt provided all four semi-finalists in the recent world juniors in Poland, and that they walked away with their fourth successive team title, it was no surprise that they dominated the qualifying competition with three winners taking their main draw tally to six.

It really shouldn't have surprised anyone that they did well in the main draw too, with Habiba Mohamed, Yathreb Adel and Nouran Gohar, who all reached the world junior semi-finals, also reaching the semi-finals in Southampton too.

That left top seed Amanda Sobhy, the only non-Egyptian winner of the world junior title in the last eight editions, standing alone in the semi-finals against the Egyptian tide.

Sobhy, looking to claim a second consecutive WSA title after winning the Buler Challenge Cup in Hong Kong last month, overcame Mohamed in what was, according to the chat on twitter, a fairly physical and aggressive match, while Adel won through to the final with a straight game win over Gohar that apparently required 60-odd decisions from the referee in the first two games alone.

There's no reason to suppose that the final will be any less a battle as two talented, determined youngsters vie for the title ...  but it resulted in a 3-0 win for Amanda to make it eight career titles and two in a row ...

(Misaki Kobayashi)

when the beast needs to be released, it will come out in full force

Things I learned in my match... Don't listen to my dads coaching when you are 2-0 up and destroying the girl

First two games between gohar and adel... 60 let decisions later... How many decisions can we get to?

Won my 8th your title today and 2nd in a row this summer! Beat my opponent 3-0 in the finals. All this hardwork is paying off..

Thank you to all my supporters who put up with me on a daily basis! Next stop: DC for my last tourny of the summer #leggo #getitdone #determined #hardworkpaysoff #wontstop #fitlife #squashlove #howbaddoyouwantit #hamptonsopen
