GoodLife Open 2012
25-28 Oct, Ottawa, Canada, $10k

28-Oct, Final:
Delierre delights home fans in Ottawa
Heather Wallace reports

Shawn Delierre today won the 2012 GoodLife Squash Open for the third time, definitely a fond venue for him. He beat Martin Knight in a long hard fought match.

Knight took the first game with some extremely tight length shots & finished well with some great backhand dropshots at the front to take it 11-5.

Delliere regrouped in the second with more patience & better length, which created easier openings for him, which he finished brilliantly at the front of the court, to take the second game 11-6.

In the third game, Knight got ahead in some long rallies, until he made three uncharacteristic errors in a row to let Delierre back in the game. Delierre then followed up with some great drop shots to take the lead & Knight from then on in was playing catch up. Delierre took a close third, 11-9.

In the fourth and final game, Delierre picked up the pace & had Knight scrambling the full lengths of the court, with ultimately Delierre winning the points & the game 11-7.

Today Delierre just had too much in his arsenal for Knight as he collected his 11th PSA title.

27-Oct, Semis:
Seeds assert in Ottawa semis
Heather Wallace reports

After taking out the top seeds in the quarter-finals, Lucas Serme and Clinton Leeuw fell to the fourth and third seeds in the semi-finals of the GoodLife Open in Ottawa.

Fourth seeded Canadian Shawn Delierre beat young Frenchman Serme in a very close match. Shawn won the duels at the front of the court at the crucial times at the end of each game he won. His experience came through as he won 13-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-5 in 51 minutes.

Third seed Martin “The Sponge” Knight was extremely sharp as he soaked up everything Leeuw threw at him. Knight, moving extremely well, ran down all of Leeuw’s short volleys to take the first two games in a close battle, 11-9, 12-10. Leeuw started to make errors in the third game, losing his patience & Knight took it 11-5.

26-Oct, Quarters:
Leeuw & Lucas take out top seeds in Ottawa
Heather Wallace reports

Just like the weather today in Ottawa, a balmy 25 celcius, Clinton Leeuw & Lucas Serme were also hot at the GoodLife Open.

Leeuw dispatched No. 2 seed Chris Simpson in 3 games. Leeuw dominated the T, putting Simpson under extreme pressure. Leeuw was on to the ball fast, attacking the volley & moving extremely well. Simpson managed to get 1 game ball in the second game, but could not convert it. That was the closest he got, with Leeuw winning 11-8, 12-10, 11-9.

In the other major upset of the night, Lucas Serme was very steady against No. 1 seed Zac Alexander, losing the first game easily & hanging in the second game coming from 2 game balls down to win it.

Alexander made squandered his 2 game balls with errors & Serme punished him with a couple of nicks to win it. Serme calmly played his way through the 3rd game taking it, before Alexander took the 4th. Again in the 5th, Serme calmly handled everything Alexander did. With Alexander ultimately making errors, Serme took the 5th game easily.

The second match in contrast was a war of attrition of long rallies with No. 3 seed Martin Knight prevailing over Aqeel Rehman 11-9, 13-11, 12-10.

The other match to go the distance tonight was No. 4 seed Shawn Delierre overcoming Olivier Pett. Pett took the first game comfortably, but Shawn, a master of upsetting the rhythm of players, frustrated Pett.

Pett lost his patience & focus, to allow Shawn to take the 2nd & 3rd game. The 4th game swung back in Pett’s favour when his length got better & his patience returned. After all of his comeback work in the 4th game, however, he gifted Shawn the 5th game & the match with 6 errors at the start of the game.

The tournament is anyone’s to win!

FROGS' TALK

Hey Fram,

Seeds through to GoodLife quarters

Round one of the 2012 edition of the GoodLife Open in Ottawa saw the top four seeds all safely through to the quarters.

FROGS' TALK (Quarters)

Bye bye.

FROGS' TALK (first round)

Hey Fram!
