Semis:
Illingworth & Lee to contest
GoodLife Open final

Heather Wallace reports

The first semi final match up was No.1 seed Julian Illingworth (USA) vs No. 5 seed David Phillips (Canada). In the first game the play was even up to 7-7, Illingworth however taking the first game by hitting some great winners at the back end of the game to win 11-7.

In the second game Illingworth began to take more control of the rallies by being more aggressive & hitting some great short winners on both sides of the court. Phillips worked hard to stay with him, but again Illingworth finished better towards the end of the second game, taking it 11-8. In the third game it was all Illingworth, he picked up the pace, was covering the court really well, picking up all that Phillips threw at him, especially at the front court. He comfortably took the third, 11-5, to win 3-0.

The second semi final match up was No.4 seed Joe Lee (England) vs No. 7 seed Shawn Delliere (Canada).

This was a match of contrasting styles, Lee playing the front court well, very solid with his drop shots, working Delliere front to back whilst Delliere played mostly hard & low to the back. Delliere’s hard hitting was in Lee’s favour as he comfortably controlled the first game, taking it 11-6. The second game was a closer affair with Delliere taking it 11-9.

In the third & fourth games, Lee again took more control of the rallies working Delliere the full length of the court, his front court game definitely hurting Delliere. He was never afraid to cut the ball in short off the volley & counter drop. He took the games 11-6,11-7.

  Quarters:
Delierre through to semis

No.1 seed Julian Illingworth (USA) finished strongly in games 1 & 3 to come from behind in each & beat No. 8 seed Andrew McDougal (Canada) 3-0.

No. 5 seed David Phillips (Canada) continued his impressive form with a comfortable win over Peter Creed (Wales) 3-0.

The match between No. 4 seed Joe Lee (England) & No. 6 seed Robin Clarke (Canada) was the match of the evening. Both players worked each other in long close rallies. It looked as if Clarke was tiring in the third, going 2-1 down in games, but he got off to a great start in the 4th & gained in confidence to take the game tying the match 2-2. That was it for Clarke however, he had nothing left in the 5th & Lee took the match without dropping a point.

In the final match of the evening, No. 7 seed Shawn Delliere (Canada) upset No. 2 seed Gilly Lane (USA), 3-1. The first 2 games were extremely close & fiercely contested & were tied 1-1. In the 3rd & 4th Delliere got the upper hand with his greater variety of shots, comfortably taking the last 2 games.

Round One:
Hamilton pushes Clarke to 5 games

The first match of the tournament was a very entertaining affair between No.1 seed Julian Illingworth (USA) & Rasmus Nielsen (Denmark). Both players did a great job moving each other around the court with some great front court exchanges & some extreme scrambling to stay in the rallies. Illingworth however had the slight upper hand & Nielsen was the harder working of the two with Illingworth taking the first 2 games. Nielsen visibly tired in the 3rd game as Illingworth kept up the pressure, winning it comfortably.

The second match was an all Canadian affair with No.8 seed Andrew McDougal beating Maxym LeClair 3-1. McDougal took a comfortable 2-0 lead before LeClair found some length forcing McDougal into some errors & taking the 3rd. McDougal regained his focus in the fourth game & took the match.

The third match saw Peter Creed (Wales) go through after No.3 seed Laurance Delasaux (England) retired in the third game due to illness. Delasaux has been suffering with a virus before this tournament but tried to play through it before retiring feeling too unwell to continue.

The fourth match saw No.7 seed Shawn Delliere (Canada) jump out to a 2-0 lead before Tom Pashley9England got into the match. In the first 2 games Pashley left too many loose balls in the open which Delliere jumped on & punished him with his range of attacking options. In the third Pashley hit a lot more straight balls to a better length & his new found patience paid off with Delliere now making errors having less angles to work with. Pashley won the third game & went close in the fourth before falling to Delliere 3-1.

The match between No.2 seed Gilly Lane (USA) & Nathan Stevenson (Australia) was a close affair over the first 3 games, with neither player dominating, Lane taking a 2-1 lead. Stevenson faded quickly in the fourth for Lane to take the match 3-1.

A good crowd was on hand to watch wildcard entry, Adrian Dudzicki from Ottawa, play No.5 seed, David Phillips (Canada). Phillips before the match said he would have to respect Dudzicki’s talent & not let him get into the match & he was true to his word. Phillips was very clinical in dispatching Dudzicki, not letting the local crowd into the match to spur on Dudzicki. Phillips won 3-0.

The penultimate match was a straightforward win for No.3 seed Joe Lee (England) over Mathew Serediak(Canada) 3-0. Lee looked very comfortable throughout the match.

The final match of the evening featured hometown & club favourite Robin Clarke vs Tyler Hamilton(Canada). The match went 5 games. In the first game, Clarke was very tentative & Hamilton took advantage, taking the first game with some deft backhand straight drop winners. Clarke was far more aggressive in the second game which he then dominated not giving Hamilton time & keeping him off balance, taking the game quickly. The match turned back in Hamilton’s favour in the third when Clarke again was passive with his balls sitting up for Hamilton to take advantage of. Hamilton definitely silenced the crowd, again winning key points in the front left corner & taking the game. In the fourth Clarke once again picked up his game, became more aggressive & dominated the game to tie the match 2-2. The crowd was not quite sure what to expect in the 5th, but Clarke once again did a good job of being attacking minded, mixing up his shots, keeping Hamilton away from the front left corner & catching him on numerous front court angles. Clarke took the 5th game comfortably.
