Sun 12th, Finals Day:
Germany take the team title.

Hosts Germany upset the seedings to take the European U19 team title for the second time in four years as they beat top seeds and defending champions England in front of a packed crowd in Germering.

With the boys drawn to play first, as in the previous two rounds, Raphael Kandra and Rudi Rohrmuller both won in four games - both pulling away convincingly at the end - to clinch the title for the hosts -  who have reached the final nine times  and now beaten England twice after first winning the battle in the 2006 climax in Switzerland.

England, finalists in all 26 championships since 1984, surprisingly did not play their individual champion Anthony Graham after missing the deadline for team selection and being forced to play their squad's No1 and No2 listed boys. Graham was unbeaten in nine matches in his last major junior championships before turning 19 on Monday.

It was an early start for of the final day of competition for Ireland, whose 9am 2-1 victory put Hungary in 15th place while the Irish went on to play again, losing out to Sweden for 13th place.

The showcourt schedule started with the 3rd/4th playoff, and it was Wales who grabbed the podium place at the expense of France. David Haley took the opening match in five, and Hywel Robinson clinched it for the Welsh against a tired-looking Lucas Serme.

The biggest 'overachievers' were Scotland, who beat the Czech Republic to claim fifth place, five better than their seeding.

Sat 11th, Day Three:
England & Germany through to the final ...

It all went to seeding in the quarter-finals, with all four matches settled by the boys' matches, leaving the girls to play a dead rubber in each case.

In the semi-finals top seeds England had to rely on individual champion Sarah-Jane Perry to win the decider against Wales, while the German boys both won tight matches against their French opponents to put themselves into Sunday's final.

So David Campion's England will be aiming for their ninth title in ten years while the Germans will be hoping for a repeat of their success three years ago when Barry Dodson led them to a famous triumph ...

Top seeds clinch top spots as
Swiss & Scots upset the odds ...

The crucial match of pool A saw #1 seeds England taking on #8 Finland whose team included the #1 seed from the individual event Henrik Mustonen, who started the action off against Chris Fuller.

The question on everyone's mind ... could Mustonen repeat his victory over Fuller in the individual event or would Fuller gain revenge.

Mustonen started strongly and won the first game 11-2 in 8 minutes. Fuller responded well, winning the next two games 11-8 and 11-6 before Mustonen again powered to an 11-3 win in the fourth to equal the scores.
Again Mustonen started very strongly taking a 7-1 lead but Fuller responded with what energy he had left and took a 9-8 lead in two hands. Mustonen, surprisingly still looking reasonably strong, levelled the score at 9 all and then a stroke decision gave him match ball - which he duly took after 54 exciting minutes.

He later explained that protecting the ankle injury he suffered in the individual event meant he was not forcing the pace in full and he was able to have some reserves in hand for the key final game.

So, 1-0 to Finland, but individual champions Anthony Graham and Sarah Jane Perry comfortably won the remaining two matches, both 3-0, to secure a 2-1 win for England and a place at the top of the the quarter-final draw, which starts tomorrow.

The final match of the pool rounds saw Switzerland grab a quarter-final place at the expense of Finland with a 2-1 win to guarantee a top eight finish.

Earlier Wales beat pool D rivals Czech Republic 2-1 to secure their place as pool winners.

Scotland secured a surprise quarter-final berth with victory over Ireland, the Scots taking second place after yesterday's upset win over the Netherlands. Hosts Germany avoided the need for countback as they scored their third straight win, putting the Netherlands into the 9-16 playoffs.

Third seeds France clinched top place in pool C with a 2-1 win over neighbours Belgium. Individual second seed Sam Van Brusellen got Belgium off to a good start with a 3/0 win Antoine Camille Petrucci, but Lucas Serme, the individual silver-medallist, and Melissa Alves turned the tie round in favour of the French.

Individual champions win the bucking bronco contest too ... Graham lasts 28 seconds ...

After a rest day on Wednesday it's on to the team competition for the final three days, with defending champions England seeded to retain their title.

David Campion
is looking to continue his remarkable record as head coach of England under 19s as he targets a ninth team success in the last ten years at the European Championships in Munich.

"As the defending champions and No.1 seeds for the team event our expectation is to retain the title although Germany and France will be our main rivals. In a 3 string match you never can take anything for granted so we will work hard and fight for every point."
