BRITISH UNDER 23 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Sun 26th, Finals:
[1] Millie Tomlinson 3-0
[3/4] Alison Thomson
11/6, 11/8, 11/7
[1] Declan James 3-0 [2] Richie Fallows
12/10, 11/7, 11/4
World
University Champion Millie Tomlinson (Derbyshire) added the British
Under 23 Championship to her trophy cabinet with a hard fought win
over Alison Thomson of Middlesex at Hunts County Squash Club in
Cambridgeshire.
The first was a tight affair with long rally followed by long rally
and few stoppages and both players eager to play everything. There
was little to choice between the two but it was Thompson who had to
do the lion’s share of the running and this seemed to take its toll
as each game rolled on. Tomlinson was in control throughout but had
to stay focused to earn an 11-6 11-8 11-7 victory in 44 minutes.
For
Tomlinson this was her fourth British title having already bagged
the Under 13, 15 & 19 crowns in a great junior career. For Thompson
this was a good tournament and a great experience with many more
years to look forward to returning and trying again. Next for
Tomlinson – the CourtCare Open and then it’s off to Hull in an
attempt to qualify for the Allam British Open.
In the men’s final it was Declan James (Nottingham) who was out to
put last year’s final defeat to Charles Sharpes behind him and he
didn’t disappoint – dispatching Richie Fallows (Essex) in three.
It
was a great match for the spectators who were treated to some
wonderful clean squash and great retrieving. The first was close but
James always had his nose in front and although Fallows levelled at
10all he sneaked it 12-10. From then on it looked like James had the
edge and so it proved taking it comfortably in the end 12-10 11-7
11-4 in 51 minutes.
All in all another great British Under 23 Championships in a
fantastic venue – well done to all at Hunts County Squash Club.

BRITISH UNDER 23 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Sat 25th DAY TWO
A
busy day at Hunts County with the British Under 23 Championships
taking centre stage but sharing the venue with a wide mix of other
sports and participants - football, bowls and tennis.
Semi-Finals:
After this afternoon’s encounter with Patrick Rooney (Merseyside)
Richie Fallows (Essex) must have been a little nervous before he
took to court to face James Earles (Yorkshire) with a place
in tomorrow’s final at stake – Earles is playing well and eager to
have one last go at this title before he moves out of age. However
Fallows seemed more at ease with his game and put in a solid and
professional performance to see off Earles’ challenge 11-6 11-9 11-8
in 42 minutes.
The
second men’s semi between Declan James (Nottinghamshire) and
Ashley Davies (Derbyshire) was an absolute delight to watch –
two players who want to play squash, will try and play the ball and
are as honest as they come, even when it was at crucial points in
the fifth – as one of the referees commented ‘a credit to the
sport.’ Davies was the underdog but played some great squash and
took it to the wire.
After losing the first James seemed to take control and it looked
like being a 3-1’er. But as we know form Davies junior days he
certainly isn’t one to lie down and he dug deep to take the
initiative away from James and take it into a decider. Too close to
call but at the death it was James who was the stronger and its he
who returns to tomorrow’s final hoping to go one better than last
year.
The first women’s semi-final was a real fight from the off with both
Alison Thomson (Middlesex) & Lucy Beecroft (Northumbria)
eager to reach the final. The first was neck and neck all the way
with game balls to both players before Thomson edged it 13-11.
Beacroft hit straight back to level things up, and so it continued
2-1 and then 2-2. As it entered the fifth it was a case of who had
the stamina and on this occasion it was Thompson that had the energy
level and eased it 11-4.
Thomson’s reward – a final berth against No1 seed Millie
Tomlinson (Derbyshire) who showed her class once again as see
eased past Jessica Davis of Cheshire 11-4 11-3 11-4 in 29
minutes.
Quarter-Finals
The men’s Quarter Finals all went to seed with championship
favourite Declan James (Notts) ending Harry Falconers good
run, Ashley Davies (Derbys) defeating Surrey’s Matthew
Broadberry and James Earles taking the all Yorkshire quarter
final against Taminda Gata Aura – all in straight games.
Number
2 seed Richie Fallows completes the semi’s line up but had to
fight hard to join the others as Patrick Rooney of Merseyside put up
spirited resistance. The first two games were tight and shared with
Rooney determined to run himself into the ground for the cause and
play everything, but this looked to have taken its toll with Fallows
taking the third easily.
However Fallows then seemed to switch off and let Rooney regroup and
level the match again at 2 all but back came Fallows who moved up a
gear to cross the finishing line. So in this afternoons semis it’s
James against Davies and Fallows against Earles.
Millie Tomlinson (Derbys) is looking good for her top seeding
and showed no weaknesses as she defeated Lucy Turmel (Suffolk) in
three. Tomlinson now faces Jessica Davis (Cheshire) who made
it through her tough quarter with Kace Bartley (Surrey) 3-1.
It was heartbreak for the No2 seed Georgina Kennedy of Kent who was
clearly still struggling from a niggle she received in yesterday’s
win.
Lucy Beecroft (Northumbria) is now firmly back after her long
injury layoff and is starting to look her old self on court. She
took the first 11-6 and was 10-2 up in the second when Kennedy
offered her hand – a real shame for Kennedy but Beacroft is looking
in form and moves onto the semis where she faces 3/4 seed Alison
Thomson.

BRITISH UNDER 23 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Fri 24th DAY ONE
Nestled amid the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside in the
picturesque and sleepy village of Hemingford Grey, Hunts County
Sports Club is at the heart of the local community. Home to an array
of sports including tennis, bowls, football and cricket as well as
squash, the club is central to local life.
Under the excellent stewardship of Colin Griggs, and before him
James Powley, the club has now staged the British Under 23
Championships for seven years and the championships have always been
hosted with a warm welcome and a smile from all involved at the
club.
As has become customary over the years the sun was high in the sky
and blazing down as the finishing touches were being made to the
weekend preparations. Unfortunately the weather isn’t expected to
last but the quality of squash is predicted to remain high.
The main contenders for the men’s crown sat out round one leaving
the remaining seeds to warm up for the challenge ahead and all
successfully negotiated their route with the loss of only 2 games .
Sixteen year old Kyle Finch (Hampshire) dropped a game against the local Jeremy Harris
(Cambridgeshire) but won through in a very clean,
competitive and good spirited encounter while Luke Parker
(Leicestershire) had to fight hard throughout to overcome the
stubborn resistance of Tom Bailey (Surrey) 11-5 9-11 11-9 11-8 in 42
minutes.
The first top 8 seed to fail to make it to the quarter finals was
5/8 Bradley Masters (Kent) who retired injured whilst just behind
13-11 5-11 6-9 to Matthew Broadberry of Surrey. Ashley Davies
(Derbyshire) was given a good run by Kyle Finch who took the third
before losing out in 4.
Top seed and favourite for the title Declan
James of Nottinghamshire was the beaten finalist twelve months ago
and hopes to claim the title this time of asking. He got off to a
solid start with a professional 11-4 11-2 11-4 win over Tom Bamford
(Yorkshire) in 20minutes.
The final match off court was a great fight between 5/8 seed and
Conor Sheen (Merseyside) and 9/16 seed Harry Falconer of
Lincolnshire. There was never much in it, first blood to Sheen 11-6,
second to Falconer 11-9. The 3rd and 4th couldn’t have been closer
and were shared both 12-10 before Falconer took control and ran out
the victor 11-5 in the fifth to set up an unexpected quarter final
against the top seed James. A great match to finish the day.
Millie Tomlinson (Derbyshire) comes into the tournament in good form
and is getting herself noticed with a steady rise up the world
rankings. After a great junior career Tomlinson moved to university
in America but is now back and eager to add the U23 crown to her
stash of British junior titles. Whilst most of the seeds progressed
to the quarter finals unscathed there were a couple of great matches
and upsets.
Hertfordshire’s Grace Gear who took out Welsh 5/8 seed Jenny Haley
in a real seesaw affair that saw her have to fight back twice from a
game down before finally prevailing 8-11 11-7 11-13 11-9 11-8.
However match and performance of the day must go to Lucy Turmel
(Suffolk) who defeated 5/8 seed Katrina Burrows (Merseyside) in a
marathon 68 minute battle. The first game set the scene with Turmel
taking a 5-0 lead before being pegged by Burrows who went on to lead
10-6 before Turmel refocused and sneaked it 12-10.
Burrows levelled at 1-1 before unforced errors crept in and the next
two were shared. The decider was then a nervy affair with match
balls for both players before Turmel finally triumphed 12-10 11-13
11-9 12-14 13-11.

James and Tomlinson favourites
for British U23 Titles
This weekend sees the British U23 Championships return once again to
Hunts County Squash Club in Cambridgeshire.
Last season saw Charles Sharpes and Carrie Ramsey take the
prestigious British titles which through the support of the Hunts
County team have become much desired on the domestic squash
calendar.
The favourite for the men’s title is Declan James
(Nottinghamshire) who has had a great start to 2015, winning the
London U23 Championships and the Guilfoyle Financial PSA Classic in
Canada and is now No66 in the World Rankings.
James is likely to meet 3/4 seed Ashley Davies (Derbyshire)
in Saturdays semi finals should matches go to seed, Davies will be
looking to make his mark in this event after an injury hit start to
his professional career.
The bottom half of the draw sees former European U19 Champion
Richie Fallows (Essex) as the No2 seed. Fallows, still 19 is now
world No75 and making good progress on the tour having won the
Pilatus Cup and reaching seven semi finals in the past year.
One of those semi final results was against Declan James in the
London U23 Championships which James won in the fifth, Fallows will
be hoping for a role reversal should they meet in the final on
Sunday. James Earles (Yorkshire) occupies the 3/4 seeded
position in the bottom half and will be sure to test Fallows for
that final spot having reached three tour semi finals himself this
year so far.
The current World University Champion, Millie Tomlinson
(Derbyshire) comes into the event as top seed in the Womens draw.
Tomlinson now No61 in the world rankings is starting to make
progress on the tour after studying in America and now has 2 tour
titles to her name, most recently the Liberty Bell Open in January.
Seeded to meet her in the final is the current English, British and
European U19 Champion Georgina Kennedy (Kent).
Kennedy, world ranked 89 recently won the London U23 Championships
and will be looking to cause an upset and add the British title to
her collection. Jess Davies (Cheshire) and Alison Thomson
(Surrey) hold the 3/4 seeded positions and they will also be hoping
to have their say on who contests the trophy.
To add an extra bit of spice to proceedings the winners of the two
titles will be rewarded with local spots in the Allam British
Open Qualification which takes place in Hull between 9th and
17th May.
