It’s Carrie at the Third Time of Asking,
Sharpes Makes Amends for Last Year

Carrie Ramsey finally ended the long wait to get her hands on the British Under 23 Championship trophy with a 3-1 win over No2 seed Victoria Temple-Murray. Both players started nervously and the early exchanges were littered with errors and strokes.

Temple-Murray took the first 11-9 but the squash was far from settled and the game was wide open. Losing the first seemed to galvanise Ramsey and she came out with added grit and raced into an 8-0 lead in the second before levelling things 11-6. Ramsey now seemed settled and started to play the calmer and steadier squash with Temple-Murray unable to find any rhythm and leaving the ball open for Ramsey to control.

After taking the third Ramsey seemed to realise she had it in the bag and eased to victory and took the title 9-11 11-6 11-6 11-6 in 51 minutes. A great win for Ramsey who finally has the Under 23 crown to add to the British Under 19 title she won back in 2010.

Charles Sharpes eased to the men’s title with a convincing 3-0 victory over Declan James in 35 minutes. James started brightly and went 4-1 up before Sharpes found his feet and started to exert pressure and control to take the first 11-6.

Although the squash was good and competitive Sharpes was far too fast and raced to into a 2 game lead. James started the 3rd well and took a 4-0 lead and with it there seemed renewed home for the Nottinghamshire player.

However Sharpes soon regained control taking the following 5 points and then went on to secure the match 11-6 and with it the title - a well-deserved win for the world No62.

Sat 12th, Day Two:

Semi Finals

Carrie Ramsey bt Lydia Hume                11-8 11-9 11-7 (24m)
Victoria Temple-Murray bt Sam Ward      11-7 11-8 11-9 (26m)

Declan James bt Nathan Lake        14-12 3-11 11-9 11-7 (67m)
Charles Sharpes bt James Earles 11-9 11-5 10-12 11-2 (53m)

Carrie Ramsey turns 23 in a couple of weeks and arrived in Cambridgeshire determined to finally win the British Under 23 title after the heartache of missing out in the final for the last two years. Her surprise opponent in the semi’s was Hampshire’s Lydia Hulme who had earlier dispatched 3/4 seed Lucy Townley. Although Ramsey was the overwhelming favourite Hume put up some great resistance striking the ball really well. However Ramsey was far too experienced and determined and took it in three to set up her date with destiny.

The second semi saw No2 seed Victoria Temple-Murray tackle Sam Ward of Northumbria. Again it was a well contested match with both players going for everything and fighting out tough rallies from the back of the court. A close contest ensued but Temple-Murray always looked to have the edge and booked her final spot with an 11-7 11-8 11-9 win.

Charles Sharpes is another player with unfinished business at the Under 23’s – last year saw him lose the title to Ben Coleman in a bad tempered and ugly final. This time around he looks calm and collected and appeared in good form against James Earles. The first was really close but Sharpes edged it 11-9 before storming to the second 11-5 and reaching match ball at 10-6 in the third. However Earles was not going to lie down and after somehow losing the unforced errors that had blighted his quarter final played some exquisite squash to fight back and save the 4 match balls and then take the game 12-10. Unfortunately that effort cost Earles and Sharpes came out in the fifth all guns blazing and eased to victory 11-2 for a 3-1 win.

The last semi-final of the day was between No2 seed Declan James and 3/4 seed Nathan Lake. The early sections of the match turned into a ‘let fest’ with both players reluctant to take any chances. James sneaked the opener 14-12 before Lake stormed back to level things 11-3 and the third panned out as the first had – cagey with James again coming out on top 11-9. The fourth was well contested and a little more free flowing but James proved worthy of his No2 billing and took it 11-7.

Mens Quarter Finals

Charles Sharpes bt Youssef Abdalla 11-5 11-6 11-6 (24m)
James Earles bt Joel Makin 9-11 11-6 11-9 6-11 11-9 (79m)

Nathan Lake bt Oliver Holland 11-8 11-2 11-5 (35m)
Declan James bt Robert Downer 11-4 11-9 8-11 11-6 (63m)

Womens Quarter Finals:

Carrie Ramsey bt Katrina Burrows 12-10 11-6 2-11 11-5 (39m)
Lydia Hume bt Lucy Townley 11-8 12-10 7-11 11-7 (26m)

Sam Ward bt Rhianne O’Donnell 10-12 6-11 11-7 12-10 11-7 (35m)
Victoria Temple Murray bt Hannah Williams 11-6 11-7 11-6 (17m)

Quick Quarter Finals Update

Lydia Hume defeating Lucy Townley was the big upset in the Girls Quarters this morning, she will face the number 1 seed Carrie Ramsey in the SF, Ramsey herself coming through a tricky match against Katrina Burrows 3-1.

Sam Ward fought back well from 2-0 down to take her spot in the SF, she will take on the 2nd seed Tory Temple Murray who beat Hannah Williams confidently 3-0.

harles Sharpes will be the fresher player in this evenings Semi Finals, he took on Youssef Abdalla and comfortably progressed with a 3-0 victory in 24 minutes.

His SF opponent, James Earles had a monster of a match with Joel Makin. Earles lost the first, then went 2-1 down but managed to grind out a 3-2 victory in 79 minutes.

Nathan Lake progressed after beating Oliver Holland 3-0, he will now face Declan James who had a fast paced battle with Robert Downer which he took 3-1 in 63 minutes.

British Under 23 Champs - Day One

The British U23 Championships once again brought the sunshine with it down to Cambridge as Hunts County Squash Club welcomed the best U23 squash players.

The first round didn’t throw up many surprises as all seeds bar one safely progressed. Peter Dickinson, a local favourite from Cambridgeshire defeated 9/16 seed George Willis 3-1, his reward was to face former U19 National Champion Oliver Holland in the second round.

Holland had defeated Charlie Lee in the first round and quickly went 1-0 up after 5 minutes against Dickinson. Dickinson fought back in the second and saved 2 game balls to take it into a tie breaker but Holland claimed it 12-10 and took the 3rd 11-7 to wrap up a 3-0 victory in 21 minutes.

Holland now faces Nathan Lake in the Quarters after he defeated Will John 3-0. James Earles will face Joel Makin in the quarters, both were tested today with Daniel Hockborn taking a game off Earles while Patrick Rooney took a game off Makin, both 3-1 victories lasting just under 50 minutes.

The longest 3-0 victory of the day goes to Robert Downer as he pulled through a tough match against the local favourite Robert Dadds.

Dadds played very well and was unlucky not to take something away from the game as he matched Downer point for point taking it into a tie breaker in the first two games only for Downer to pick up the crucial points that mattered, 11-9 in the 3rd after 57 minutes. Downer now comes up against the 2nd seed Declan James in the Quarters after he defeated Joe Green 3-1.

The girls first round was relatively straight forward for the seeds, Abby Hicks from Wales the only player managing to take a game as she took the 2nd 12-10 against Rhianne O’Donnell. Kace Bartley pushed Katrina Burrows as they lasted longest on court out of the girls first round but Bartley was unable to stop Burrows from moving into the Quarters with a 3-0 victory.

British Under 23 Stars Set Sights on Hull

The British Under 23 Championships take place at Hunts County Squash Club between 11-13 April, supported by the clubs Sports Academy and Living Sport.

World No62 Charles Sharpes is the top seed in the men’s draw and will be looking to go one better than last year when he lost the final to Ben Coleman in a five game battle. Sharpes' main challengers are likely to be second seed and World No83 Declan James, James Earles and Nathan Lake.

This year is Carrie Ramsey’s final chance to add the Under 23 crown to the British and European Under 19 titles she won back in 2010. Ramsey has suffered final heartache in both the last two years finishing runner up to double champion Sarah-Jane Perry.

Ramsey starts as the No1 seed but is drawn to meet Victoria Temple-Murray in the final, which would be a repeat of last weekend’s Northumbria Open final, in which Temple-Murray triumphed 3-1.

In an added incentive to the prestigious national titles on offer the champions will also qualify to line up in the PSA & WSA qualifying draws of the Allam British Open which takes place from 10-18 May in Hull.
