Park Estates Bexley
Open 2014
15-19 Oct, Bexley, UK, $5k |
Sun 19th - Semis/Finals:
Coleman takes the title
So the day finally arrived, semi finals and finals to decide who
will be the park estates bexley open winners 2014!
Started with the Wsa semi finals. On court 2 Lily Taylor
started like a rocket taking he 1st game 11/1 against Amelia
Henley. But like yesterday , Amelia came back strong and
gradually wore down the no.1 seed and run out a 3-1 winner to take
her place in the final.
On the adjacent court, her Kent team mate, Gina Kennedy was
in total control against her Spanish opponent , Marina de Juan,
taking a 2-0 lead. Marina steadied the ship and came into the game
taking the next 2 games to take it to a decider. The 5th was a nervy
affair but Gina just about held her nerve to join Amelia in the
final.
Next on were the 2 men's PSA semi finals. Though both matches
were 3-0 to Ben Coleman and Richie Fallows. They were both
made to work hard by Douglas Kempsell and Mike Harris
respectively.
So it was to be an all Essex PSA final.
Onto the Wsa final and 2 of England's best junior girls
battling it out for the title. Both players are members at the host
club and have done hours of training on the courts and know each
other well having played each other in 2 finals over the last few
weeks with Gina winning both 3-2. Most people expected another close
battle. Each game was closely contested with both girls showing
their potential on the Wsa circuit for years to come.
First game to Gina. 2nd game and Amelia takes a 9-7 lead but a few
cheap errors hand Gina a 2-0 lead. 3rd game and again Amelia is up
7-3 but again mistakes start to flow and Gina snatches the game and
the title on a tie break!
Final match of the 5 day event was the men's Park Estates
PSA open. World no.74 Ben Coleman v world no.100 Richie
Fallows. Ben looking for his 4th PSA title and richie his 2nd.
First game is a nightmare for Richie, making mistake after mistake.
Ben closing out the game at 10-3 with a great backhand cross court
knick! 1-0 Ben
2nd game and Ben is soaking up and playing controlled simple squash
waiting for openings from richie. Again Richie finds it hard to get
points on the board , Ben takes it 11/4.
Half way through the 3rd and it looks all over as Ben leads 6-3.
Then a blood injury for Ben means a short break in play and maybe
time for richie to get his head together. Ben has the blood injury
on his mind. Richie sneaks it 11/9.
4th game and Richie is pumped up but Ben nullifies everything Richie
has to offer and closes the match 11/4 and claims the title 3-1.
End of great event. There over 100 people squeezed in watching the
final and work starts on next years event tomorrow ! |

Sat 18th - First Round & Quarters:
World squash day at bexley today and what a day it was. We had an
inter club junior match which bexley won! This was followed by the
start of the Wsa event. Only a few matches this morning due to some
withdrawals.
Bexley members Amelia Henley and Katie Wilson got through the
1st round in contrasting style. Katie 12/10 in the 5th and Amelia a
convincing 3-0 winner along with Kace Bartley to join the players
who had byes in tonight's 1/4 finals.
The main draw of the Park Estates Bexley Challenger 5 started
off with convincing wins for Richie Fallows over Lyell Fuller
and Reuben Phillips over Adam Auckland who seemed to
be carrying an injury. Mike Harris then beat a below par
Steve London and Chris Fuller won a tough 3-0 against
Kiwi Ben Grindrod.
It was then on to the Scottish boys, Kevin Moran and Douglas
Kempsell who overcame lucky loser Tristan Eysele and
James Earles respectively to set up an all Scottish 1/4 final.
George Parker had to work hard to take a 3-0 against no.6
seed Alex Ingham.
Final match of the 1st round was head coach and tournament promoter
Ben Ford, taking on no.1 seed Ben Coleman. A 75 minute
match in front of a packed crowd ebbed and flowed but ultimately
Coleman got more balls back and had more in the tank at crucial
points.
After a short break, the WSA 1/4 finals kicked off with a
straight forward win for lily Taylor over Katie wilson. Amelia
Henley then won a strange match. After losing 11/2 she then won
11/2 11/0 11/2.
Next match was delayed slightly after Spaniard Marina de Juan
went to the wrong club! Luckily someone from that club was heading
to bexley to watch the squash and gave her a lift.
It was worth the wait as she dispatched no.4 seed Mari Taylor
3-2.
Final Wsa match saw no.2 seed Gina won a close 3-1 against
Kace Bartley.
The PSA 1/4 finals started with a slightly argumentative
match where Richie Fallows beat Reuben Phillips 3-0.
Mike Harris and Chris Fuller then played out a very
entertaining 5 setter with players having pretty much opposite
styles of play. Fuller being fairly conservative and Harris
attacking at every opportunity. Harris produced and comeback in the
5th with some outrageous winners to take it 3-2.
The all Scottish match looked straight forearm at 2-0 to Kempsell,
Moran came strong in the 3 rd but normal service resumed in 4th
to close out 3-1.
Last match of the night was always going to be feisty with 2 players
not adverse to discussions with the ref. 3 tight games but Coleman
had just enough composure at the end of each game to close out a 3-0
win.
Wsa semis at 11am tomorrow and PSA semis 12.
Wsa final 5pm and PSA final 6pm.
Should be a great day to close a great event!

Thu 16th - Qualifying:
his evening saw the qualifying start in the park estates challenger
5 PSA event. A good size crowd were hoping for home success from the
masters brothers and club coach Gary Nisbet .
Adam Auckland v jon geekie(Scotland)
Adam always had this match in control though play some good stuff,
it generally came back with interest such is the speed of Adams
movement and variation on height and pace.adam 3-0
Joel makin (Wales) v nick Mulvey
This was an anticipated match. With the crowd expecting a close
match. It started as expected but it soon became apparent that
Joel's superior fitness was to much for nick deal with.
Although he showed flashes of the squash he is capable of , it was
to sporadic and Joel closed it out 3-0
Brad masters v paul Rawden
First of the home favourites on court . The 2 played 6 days ago in
tunbridge wells with brad edging a 3-2 win. Tonight was also very
tight but brad always kept himself a couple of points in front with
aggressive hitting, powerful movement and the occasional decent
short ball. Most of the winners came from Rawden but so the
mistakes! Brad took 3 tights games to win 3-0 beating the no.6 seed
Jamie henderson(Scotland ) v Lyell fuller
Another match that looked like it could be close but lyell dominated
the match with good variation and with the help of a few mistakes
from Jamie. Straight forward 3-0 to take out no.8 seed
Josh masters v Micah franklin( Bermuda)
Next of the home interest. Josh has recently moved to Bristol for
uni and to improve his squash.
The 1st game was over in a flash , with josh hitting with pace deep
then punishing loose balls into the front. Micah came out strong in
the next game, moving much better and showing some nice touches at
the front to make it 1-1. Josh regained his composure to get back in
the driving seat and take out the no.2 seed in a good quality 3-1
win
Ondrej uherka( Czech Republic) v Tristan franklin( South Africa)
2 very physical players pushed each other but Tristan just had
enough at the end of each game to close out a tight 3-0
Ben grindrod( New Zealand) v Anthony brindle( Gibraltar)
Good quality 1st game from both players with brindle just edging it
but it seemed to take its toll on his legs as the game went on, he
seemed to lose his physical edge while Ben got stronger.
3-1 for grindrod
Gary Nisbet v George Parker
Last of the home players tonight . Was always going to be a tough
ask for Gary, playing England's number 1 junior. Gary a acquitted
himself very well but struggled to get George off the t. George took
a 3-0 win to close the night of good squash.
Crowd enjoyed matches and are looking forward to tomorrow's
qualifying finals.
