THE
FRENCH CORNER

salut framb

01-Apr, Semi-Finals:
Glen Wilson reports
It’s Grinham against King in Atwater Final
Joelle King v Vanessa Atkinson
The first semi final kicked off with New Zealander Joelle King
against top seed Vanessa Atkinson.
In a packed gallery at the Atwater club members, patrons and
supporters turned out in style to support this fantastic event
in support of the Woman’s Professional Squash Tour.
King a local favorite started well hitting the ball crisply and
attacking from the outset keen to apply the pressure early.
Atkinson took a little while to settle but stayed close with
some nice drop winners with the first evenly poised at 5 all.
King was into her rhythm though timing the ball extremely well
looking full of confidence. She used her volley well cutting off
anything loose hitting some nice volley drop winners that
Atkinson could not reach. King went away from 5 all to 10/5.
Atkinson dug in a little and won the next two points but King
again used her reach to cut off a nice backhand volley drop to
win the first.
King looked to be full of energy and eager to stamp her
authority on the match by playing fast paced squash giving
Atkinson no time to get set and play her shots. The openings
started to come for King as Atkinson hit some loose boasts that
King put away with depth touch. King was in total dominance as
she broke away to lead 10/2. A couple of loose points by King
and two winners by Atkinson got her close but King closed it out
in a commanding second set.
In the third King seemed to relax a little and Atkinson pounced
building a 5/0 lead catching King by surprise. King fought back
to 7/8 but a couple of nice winners from Atkinson and an error
from King had Atkinson back in the match and a lifeline moving
into the fourth.
King came out very strong in the fourth powering the ball deep
into the corners moving Atkinson around the court. King was in
total control and playing some superb squash hitting the ball
with vigor attacking at any opportunity. King had found her zone
hitting winner after winner in a purple patch of 8 straight
points and with it the match 11/3 in the final set. Kings best
performance of the tournament so far dispatching the no 1 seed
as she looks in good form for tomorrows final.
Asked afterwards about tomorrows final. “I’m glad to be there
but I’m still 1 match away from the title and I would love to
win this at my home club in Montreal”
“I know it’s going to be tough as Natalie’s an amazing player
but I can’t wait to get out there.”
Jaclyn Hawkes v Natalie Grinham
These players had played each other once before in Cleveland in
February with Grinham winning a close 4 setter.
2 months on you sensed Grinham was a much better player but
Hawkes had also looked good in her first 2 rounds so we were in
for an intriguing re-match.
The points started with some long tight rallies with Hawkes
focusing on keeping Grinham pinned in the back on the court.
Grinham was working the ball around looking for opportunities to
attack Hawkes at the front. Hawkes started well to go 6/3 up but
Grinham came back strong with her trademark cross court drops
into the front left nick to lead 9/7. Hawkes tried to counter a
couple of times that left her stranded and Grinham pounced to
hit the ball away and win a close first set.
Hawkes was playing well and you sensed that she was on the right
road and had a game plan to attack Grinham. Grinham though has
the ability to take you out of your comfort zone and change
things up just as you are settling. At 6 all Grinham went to 9/6
before Hawkes found her range with the straight forehand drop to
pull it back to 9 all. Grinham again managed to find the right
shots to pull Hawkes out of position and force the errors to win
another close one to go 2 up.
It was hard to know what Hawkes should do to get back into it as
she was playing well and unlucky to be down 2 sets to 0. With
King in her corner trying to spur her kiwi team mate on Hawkes
came out in the third showing a more willing ness to attack the
front forehand corner. It paid a few dividends bringing a string
of points and taking her out to a nice lead.
Hawkes led 8/4 only for Grinham to come back and hit some drops
winners from almost impossibly positions that Hawkes couldn’t do
a lot about. Hawkes still led 9/8 hanging tough and we looked
like we were possibly heading for a fourth but Grinham again
found the answers and the space to reel off the next 4 points
and a place in her first tour final of 2011. A date with Joelle
King in tomorrows final beckons in a match that will be highly
anticipated.
Natalie said afterwards “I’m playing well and happy about making
the final. I haven’t played Joelle before so I’m looking
foreword to a tough match.”
