Avila wins epic 2012 Atlanta Open final

After being two-nil down and three match balls down (10-7) in the fourth, Afredo Avila made a giant comeback to win the 2012 Atlanta Open in front of a sold out crowd.

Clinton Leeuw, unseeded as was Avila, had had several match balls in the fourth but could not close out the game which went the full distance 15-13.

Avila gave a loud roar winning his third PSA title after the 90 minute epic.

Gordon survives as Avila advances in Atlanta

The semi-finals of the Atlanta Open will feature two unseeded players and one mightily relieved home seed after the quarter-finals at  Life Time Fitness Atlanta.

Tournament favourite Jan Koukal progessed comfortable enough, and he'll meet Alfredo Avila for a place in the final after the unseeded young Mexican overcame fourth seed Wade Johnstone in four games.

The bottom half had already seen the demise of second seed Andrew Schnell, but European junior champion Declan James couldn't follow up that win as he went down to South Africa's Clinton Leeuw in four close games.

In the 'best match of the night' according to tournament organiser Andre Maur, USA third seed Chris Gordon just about survived, coming from two games down to bea young Englishman Nathan Lake 13/11 in the fifth.

Declan dumps second seed in Atlanta

English teenager Declan James claimed one of the best scalps in his burgeoning squash career when he ousted second seed Andrew Schnell in the opening round of the Atlanta Open.

The 19-year-old from Nottingham twice came from behind to topple Canadian Schnell 7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 15-13, 11-9.

"Relieved to win 11-9 in the fifth tonight good result for me but unhappy with the way I played," admitted James via Twitter afterwards. "Need to make improvements ahead of tomorrow."

The reigning European Junior champion now faces South African Clinton Leeuw for a place in the semi-finals. Leeuw defeated Zambian qualifier Patrick Chifunda 11-5, 11-6, 12-10.

There was further unexpected English success when qualifier Nathan Lake upset Canada's Fred Reid 11-3, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4.

Lake, also 19, from Cheltenham, progresses to take on third seed Christopher Gordon, the New York-born 25-year-old who leads US interest in the long-established event.

Gordon beat Pakistan qualifier Ajaz Azmat 11-5, 13-11, 5-11, 11-5. The 34-year-old former world No38 was making his first Tour appearance for nine years.
