DOHA: Qatar will stage the International Junior Squash Championship 2005 from February 21, the Qatar Squash Federation (QSF) announced yesterday. The tournament will end on February 27.

The tournament, which will be contested by players from six countries besides the hosts, will be staged at the Khalfa Squash Complex, Tournament Director Khalid Al Obaidly, said during a press conference yesterday.

No prize money is involved but the young players will be aiming to grab trophies while they enjoy free hospitality from the hosts.

“Players from Pakistan, India, Scotland, Germany, Hong Kong, Kuwait besides our own boys, will be taking part in the tournament. Boys falling in categories of under-13 and under-15 will be allowed to take part in the tournament,” Khalid said.

According to Khalid, each team will be allowed eight players to take part in ‘Individual’ and ‘Team Championship’ categories. Twenty one players will be competing in the Under-13 category while 25 players will appear in the Under-15 segment of the championships.

The team championship will be played on a round robin format while the singles event will be played on a knockout basis.

The junior event will be the first major international squash tournament to be staged in Doha since QSF held the prestigious men’s World Open in December 2004.

The Qatar players had extensive training sessions in South Africa, staying in a city near Johannesburg, for about two weeks in preparation for the one-week tournament. The Qatari team is being managed Ahmed Abdullah (coach), Hassan Jassim (manager) and Alladin Allouba.
