Cité de l’Automobile – National Automobile
Museum
Schlumpf Collection
At the Cité de l’Automobile, car enthusiasts can admire
some 400 vintage
cars made by 97 different manufacturers, making it one of
the world’s finest collections.
The museum is based in an old 19th-century woollen mill, which
was bought by the Schlumpf Brothers in 1957, and turned into a
showcase for their fabulous collection a few years later.
The cars are arranged by theme and chronological period. The
“Automobile
Adventure” area features “Ancestors” (Panhard, Peugeot,
De Dion and Benz) and “Classics”.
The “Racing Car” area displays a group of exceptional
sports cars from the early days of racing to the present day.
The “Automobile Masterpieces” collection immerses the
visitor in a world of prestige and escapism, with some of the
world’s most prestigious models, including 2 famous Bugatti
Royales.

Fancy a drive???
'On Track' Show
Since 2011, the Cité de l’Automobile has had its own racing
circuit, where it can host events and give a new lease of
life to the vehicles in its collection, for example the “Tous
en piste!” show which takes place from April to September.
17 emblematic cars tell their story!
The
show is performed every weekend and on bank holidays at 11 a.m.
and 3 p.m. 17 characterful cars drive around telling the story
of cars from 1870 until today and presenting their history and
the life of their designers and technological and mechanical
developments.
The models follow one another on to the exhibition track to the
delight of both young and old: Ford T, Beetle, 2CV, 4CV,
Bugatti type 40, Simca Chambord, Rolls Royce, etc. Each car
will drive past the audience telling them its history and
stories. The honour is commentated by a ringmaster who guides
the visitors throughout the show. The cars will do a lap of the
track in chronological order and will take part in short
sketches.
Jean-Marie Meshaka, a director, actor and scriptwriter, wrote
the script for this show. Visitors to the Cité de l'Automobile
can discover or rediscover significant cars in history over four
periods :
- Forerunners and early motor vehicles - 1885 to 1905 :
visitors learn about the journey from the sleigh to the car with
one of the first bicycles or the De Dion Bouton. The mechanical
evolution had begun...
- The golden age of the car - 1905 to 1939 : from the
Marne taxi to the pre-war cars – these cars show how the forms
and production techniques developed.
- Cars for all - 1945 to 1970 : after the Second World
War, the car became more accessible and was the essential object
of the 20th century (2CV, Beetle)
- Challenges for car manufacturers - 1970 to today
