30-Oct, Final:
[1] Jonathon Power (Can) bt [2] John White (Sco)
11/2, 11/7, 11/6
(40m)
Detroit delight for Power
Canada's world number two Jonathon
Power captured the Motor City Open title at the Birmingham Athletic
Club in Detroit with a straight games victory over John White, the
US-based world number eleven - repeating his win in the pair's meeting in
the British Open two weeks ago.
In last year's event Power limped out at the semi-final stage with back
troubles, but this year his new-found fitness and movement were apparent
from the first round to the final point as he claimed his second Motor
City Open title.
Power started at a fast pace, taking an early 6/1 lead which he quickly
converted into a one game advantage, 11/2.
Loose play by White allowed Power to lead again in the second, 5/1, and
although White battled back to 7/8 Power stopped the run with a service
return nick winner and quickly closed out the game 11/7, much to White's
frustration.
In the final game White stayed in touch up to 5/6 but a flurry of errors
allowed Power to clinch the match, 11/6.

Top Seeds in
Detroit Final ...
Top seeds Jonathon Power and John White advanced to the
final of the Motor City Open in Detroit, after contrasting semi-final
victories at the Birmingham Athletic Club.

Power picks off Matthew
Nick Matthew started strongly in his match against Power, matching
the Canadian point for point in the first two games, taking the second on
a tie-break to level the match.
But the long rallies of those first two games started to take their toll
on the Englishman, as Power slowly started to take control. Moving to a
7/2 lead in the third with a combination of tight lengths and exquisite
drops, Power took the lead. A similar performance in the fourth saw Power
playing error-free squash as he extracted loose returns from his tiring
opponent. From a 4/1 lead he closed out the match in 80 minutes to move
into the final.
White blasts out El Hindi
Second seed White started his match against the unseeded Wael El Hindi
with a barrage of trademark winners as he moved to a 7/1 lead in the
first. A series of errors from White allowed El Hindi to close before
White claimed the game on the tie-break.
White raced away again in the second, to 6/1, but again El Hindi levelled
at 10-all, only to see the game slip away again in the ensuing tie-break.
The winners from White came thick and fast in the third as he overpowered
El Hindi to claim his place in the final. |

28-Oct, Quarters:
Three Seeds and
Surprise in Detroit
The semi-finals of the Motor City Open in Detroit will be contested by the
top three seeds, and surprise intruder.
Event favourite Jonathon Power cruised past Ong Ben Hee in straight
games, a feat repeated by second seed John White - although the
Scot needed an extended tie-break in the third to finally defeat Adrian
Grant after 70 minutes.
Third seed Nick Matthew recovered from losing the first game
against French qualifier Jean Michel Arcucci, and will face Power in the
semis.
White will meet Egypt's Wael El Hindi, who produced the upset of
the round in beating Finnish fifth seed Olli Tuominen in a four game match
littered with lets in just short of an hour.
28-Oct, Round One:
No joy for Zaman
and Azlan in Detroit
The first round of the Motor City Open in Detroit held unpleasant
surprises for the fourth and sixth seeds Azlan Iskandar and Shahid Zaman.
Iskandar was on the wrong end of a quickfire 3/0 defeat at the hands of
Egyptian Wael El Hindi, while Zaman was ousted in four games by
French qualifier Jean-Michel Arcucci.
Top seed Jonathon Power cruised to a straight-games win over young
Dutchman LJ Anjema, but second seed John White found himself 2/1
down to qualifier Cameron Pilley before the Scot recovered to take the
final two games.

"It’s tough on these courts because the ball bounces up. That helps
him keep the ball in play, and he keeps the ball so straight anyway,
he makes you have to beat him.”
"Jonathon likes to control the pace and break your rhythm, while I
like to play fast – so it should be an interesting match ..."
Nick Matthew |
THE MIRACLE OF TEXTING ...
We
were struggling all day to find out who the qualifiers played, so
grateful thanks to Jean-Michel Arcucci for texting us with
the updated draw and the early results, closely followed by LJ
Anjema ... oh, and congratulations
on your result, J-M !!!! |
