03-Feb, Final:
Golan Wins In Winnipeg

Spanish favourite Borja Golan needed almost an hour to fight off the challenge of Malaysian Nafiizwan Adnan in the final of the Winnipeg Building & Decorating Manitoba Open.

Adnan, the 21-year-old sixth seed competing in his first event in North America, caused a significant upset in the semi-finals when he removed second-seeded Canadian Shawn Delierre - thus leaving the final without local interest for the first time in its five years as a PSA Tour event.

But Golan, the 25-year-old world No24 from Santiago DC - ranked 67 places higher than his opponent - rushed to a two-game lead over the Malaysian before Adnan fought back to take the third game.

It was all to no avail, however, as the Spaniard reclaimed control of the encounter to close out the match 11/6 in the fourth.

The triumph marks Golan's first Tour title of the year - but the 16th of his career, from 20 final appearances.

Salazar Silenced in Winnipeg Quarters

Cesar Salazar's
giant-killing run in the Winnipeg Building & Decorating Manitoba Open came to an end when the Mexican was beaten by Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan in the quarter-finals at Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club.

Salazar, a qualifier, upset fellow Mexican Jorge Ferreira, the No3 seed, in the opening round.  But
the sixth-seeded Malaysian was too strong for the 20-year-old, winning in four games to reach the semi-finals.

Adnan will face local hero Shawn Delierre after the second seed from Montreal defeated fifth-seeded American Christopher Gordon
.

The other semi-final will be the clash predicted by the seedings, between favourite Borja Golan and fourth seed Yasir Butt. Spaniard Golan had an easy ride through to the last four when unseeded Pakistani Majid Khan retired injured midway through their second game
, while Butt, 19, from Pakistan, beat Ryan Donegan, the No7 seed from the USA, in straight games
.
31-Jan, Round One:
Salazars Suffer Mixed
Fortunes In Manitoba

Mexican twins Arturo and Cesar Salazar suffered surprising mixed fortunes in the first round of the Winnipeg Building & Decorating Manitoba Open, the $15,000 event in its fifth year at Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club in Winnipeg in the Canadian province of Manitoba.

Cesar, a qualifier, upset fellow Mexican Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira, the No3 seed, and will now meet Malaysia's sixth seed Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan for a place in the semi-finals.

But Arturo, the eighth seed who is also 20 and also from San Luis Potosi, crashed out in a four-game upset to Pakistan's Majid Khan. Peshawar-based Khan, the 24-year-old who reached last week's Bankers Hall Club Open in Vancouver as a qualifier, maintained his fine form to beat his Mexican opponent.

Khan now comes up against Borja Golan, the top seed from Spain.
