15-Sep-11:
Whirlwind White Blows in to Town!
Hot on the heels of Hurricane Katie, squash’s own whirlwind,
John White, will return to the 9 Telecom Legends of Squash
tournament held at St. George's Hill, Weybridge.
The
world's hardest hitter of a squash ball and the former world No
1 from Scotland came 4th last time around after a gripping
battle with Simon Parke, but will be hoping to improve in
this year's event which runs from 16th-19th September.
White, a finalist at the World Open and the British Open, has
been drawn in the same group as old adversary Jonathan Power
so the crowds are sure to be entertained in their final pool
match on Sunday 18th.
In the first game of his final pool match against Peter Nicol at
last year's tournament, White blew the Englishman away with
winners all over the court. Having survived the onslaught Nicol
then narrowly won the next two games to make the final but
everyone in the draw is aware of the threat White will pose.
"Whitey
is one of those players that it is a pleasure to be on court
with as it gives you the best view in the house of just what can
be done to a squash ball! Last year, he was simply unplayable in
the first game, made worse by the fact that he kept laughing
each time he smashed the ball in the nick!" said Nicol, who has
been sharpening up with White in the US this summer on his Nicol
Champions Academy Camps.
One of the professional tour's most popular players, White has
recently taken up the role of Head Coach of the Men's and
Women's Squash Teams at Drexel University in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania host to next month’s US Open.
A 12 time winner on the PSA tour, the Scot will be hoping to
take his first Legends title back to his students.
Last year the event was close to a sell-out and tickets priced
from £15-£35 for the 9 Telecom Squash Legends event are now only
on-sale from the club on 01932 843541.

Get on
Court with a Legend!
Eventis
Sports in association with Nine Telecom are offering the chance
to get on court with a squash legend during this week’s Nine
Telecom Squash Legends at St. George’s Hill in Weybridge.
Each day the legends will put groups of players through their
paces with a series of clinics aimed at both adults and juniors,
giving them all the chance to step on court with former World
no1s, World and British Open Champions.
Former World no.1 Peter Nicol explains ‘the clinics are
an integral part of our legends tour as they give keen squash
players, both young and old, the opportunity to hopefully learn
a thing or two from the players that have been there and done
it! Last weekend in Ipswich we had over 30 participants over the
two days and are sure there will be even more in Weybridge this
weekend’.
Anyone wishing to take part should contact Peter Nicol on
pnicol@eventis-sports.com to book in for one of the
one hour slots between 11-3pm on Saturday, Sunday and
Monday.
Last year the event was close to a sell-out and tickets priced
from £15-£35 for the 9 Telecom Squash Legends event are now on
sale from the St George's Hill Club on 01932 843541. |
07-Sep-11:
Ricketts to Returns to
Competive Action at Legends!
Former
world No 3 Anthony Ricketts will roar back into
competitive action when he makes his debut on the Legends of
Squash Tour at the 9 Telecom Legends event at St. Georges
Hill Tennis Club, Surrey later this month. The Australian
replaces Martin Heath who was forced to withdraw from the 9
Telecom Legends of Squash Tournament with an ankle injury.
As well as competing in Weybridge from 16-19th September,
Ricketts will take part in the next leg of the tour which
follows hot on its heels and takes place at the Aberdeen
Squash & Racquets Club from 23-25th September.
Ricketts, who won titles at the British Open, Tournament of
Champions and the Super Series Finals, is keen to get back on
court after four years away from the tour. And he has plenty of
unfinished business with his former opponents after injury
forced him to curtail his professional career at just 28 years
of age. After a fifth operation to repair cartilage in his right
knee, Ricketts acknowledged in 2007 that he could no longer
survive the daily rigours of training and playing matches at the
highest level.
After retiring, Ricketts worked as Head Coach of the New Zealand
National Squad before returning home to take up his current role
as Senior Coach for the Squash Program at the Australian
Institute of Sport.
He now spends a good deal of his working life hitting on court
with the top Australian players as was evident at last month’s
Men’s World Teams in Paderborn and the fiery Aussie cannot wait
to compete again.
"The
'Legends of Squash Tour' is another fantastic squash venture
conceived by the Eventis team.
"Not only does it give the squash fans another opportunity to
see the greats of the game continue to perform, but it also
allows the occasion for former top players to once again compete
against each other in a sport that they hold dear.
"I am excited, and nervous, about the challenge of again
stepping onto court with the likes of Peter Nicol, Jonathon
Power and John White. It is something I do not take lightly and
look forward to reliving some of the battles of yesterday."
Although coming into the event
as a late replacement and therefore un-seeded Ricketts is one
player that the others won’t relish playing, defending champion
Peter Nicol has Ricketts first up on the Friday night and
explained:
"Anthony was one of those players that you knew would give 100%
every time he stepped on court and whilst it is very exciting to
have him join the tour, I might not be feeling quite the same
during our opening encounter at St George’s Hill!"

18-Aug-11:
Power Back for Revenge at the
9Telecom Legends!
Jonathon
Power will return to Weybridge in Surrey for the 9 Telecom
Legends of Squash tournament desperate to make amends for last
year’s final defeat at the hands of long-time rival Peter
Nicol.
Canadian Power suffered a four game loss at the inaugural event
at St. Georges Hill Lawn Tennis Club but knows better
than anyone how to topple the champion this time around.
Power fought Nicol on the PSA Tour for a decade in which their
battles dominated the game. While the Canadian ended up with one
less win in their head-to-heads, he always thrilled the crowds
with his dazzling arsenal of trick shots and no lack of passion.
Now 37 but still in great physical shape thanks to his role at
the National Squash Academy in Ontario, Power will be hoping to
top Group A with another final showdown against Nicol a distinct
possibility.
Few sporting rivalries can match the intensity of those in
squash; the only racket sport where opponents share the same
space without the separation of a net. It is a brutal version of
boxing using rackets with players manoeuvring their opponents
around the court looking to work them into submission or kill
them off with a deadly winner. Power & Nicol have fought out
many such battles over the years, and Power has never been one
to enjoy losing so will be fired up this September to ensure
that doesn’t happen again.
“Last year’s event was a lot of fun, particularly facing up to
Peter again, but the final result wasn’t so enjoyable so I will
be looking to end this year’s event slightly differently!!” said
the mercurial Canadian from his club in Toronto.
Last year the event was close to a sell-out and tickets priced
from £15-£35 for the 9 Telecom Squash Legends event are now on
sale ...

06-Jul-11:
Power & Nicol Return in the 2011
9Telecom Legends, St. George’s Hill
Eventis Sports Marketing has announced that the Legends of
Squash Tour will return to Weybridge with the second edition
of the 9 Telecom Legends of Squash at St. Georges Hill
Lawn Tennis Club, Surrey.
The Gold Tour event will take place from 16-19th September
2011 and headlining the event once again will be arch rivals
Jonathon Power & Peter Nicol.
Last year, Nicol came out on top with a hard fought four set win
in the final and Power will be out for revenge. However, Nicol
survived a scare en route to the final in the face of some
devastating squash from ex-World no.1 & world’s hardest hitter
John White.
He will be happy to see White in the other pool, but will once
again cross rackets with ex-World no.3 Simon Parke. This
year ex-World no.4 Martin Heath and ex-British Champions
Nick Taylor and Stephen Meads join the fray. With
former British Open Champion David Evans completing the
mouth-watering line-up, it is destined to be a marvellous few
days of squash in Weybridge.
Peter Nicol, director of Eventis, also beat Power in the
Baltimore leg of last year’s inaugural tour and has proven his
form winning the key rubber against St. George’s Hill’s World
no.40 Mark Krajscek in the PSL Finals in May. Power has been out
of action for much of the season with a sore elbow but is
reported to be in training to put the record straight this
year!!
