Top seeds drawn to play in Quarters
The
‘FA Cup’ style draw being used for the quarter-finals of the
Kuwait PSA Cup, the first time this random draw method has
been used in professional squash, saw the top two seeds
Nick Matthew and Karim Darwish drawn to play each
other in the last eight.
The draw took place during the gala dinner held at Kuwait
Towers on the tournament’s rest day, with Sheikha Fadya Al
Sabah pulling the first numbered ball out of the bowl.
That was Stewart Boswell, and the Aussie then drew his own
opponent, Gregory Gaultier.
Next
out was an all-English match between long-time rivals Peter
Barker and James Willstrop, and when Darwish was next out of
the hat there was a one-in-three chance that we would have
the top two seeds playing each other.
Darwish duly pulled out ball number one, and the ‘dream
quarter-final’ was set.
That left Mohamed El Shorbagy and Laurens Jan Anjema and we
had our quarter-finals.
