Sun 13th, Day ONE:
Day one of Junior CASA 2014 kicked off today at the BSRA with
the event being officially opened by Bermuda's very own Minister
Wayne Scott after a well organized opening ceremony.
The matches began straight after beginning with the BU13 and
GU13 age groups.
Mostly all straight forward results for the youngsters with the
exception of an all Bermudian battle between Oscar Lindsey
and Shane White. Oscar Lindsey coming from 2-1 down to
take the match 3-2 after quite a lot of emotion from both
players.
In the BU15 and GU15 age groups saw some very strong
performances from the top seeds to win 3-0 rather comfortably as
well as two strong performances from newcomers Emma Turnbull
and Kali Maclean. The pair from the Cayman Islands showed
no signs of nerves and made it past two very tough matches to
book their spot in the next round.
The BU17 and GU17 soon followed. Mainly straight forward
results with the exception of two two extremely entertaining
matches which can only be summed up in one word "run".
First
up was Gyles Luke from the Cayman Islands against
Roland Brewster from Barbados, there were some great rallies
in this match seeing both boys flying around the court to do
whatever they could to get a ball back on the front wall.
Eventually Roland coming out the victor making it back from 2-0
down to win 3-2.
Roland said this after his match: "I played a formidable
opponent out there today and had to push the hardest I could to
make it through, I'm really happy to be in the next round."
Next
up was Dylan Muldoon of Bermuda against Alec Melville
of Guyana, this was a real see-saw battle with both players
having hardly anything to separate them. The scores and rallies
could have gone either way easily but on this day Dylan Muldoon
came out on top winning 3-1 all games ending in a tie break.
After his match Dylan was quoted saying: "Mentally and
physically that was so hard, I'm happy to make it through to the
next round in my first CASA."
Last up were the BU19 which saw a few familiar faces up
against each other, some of whom will be their last Junior CASA
tournament.
All
matches ended up being 3-0 except for one which has to go down
as the match of the day between Daniel Murphy of the
Cayman Islands against Christian Edghill of Trinidad and
Tobago.
The match started with Christian looking the more steady and
patient of the two players, hitting his length well and being
rewarded by going 2-0 up. In the 3rd Daniel began finding his
length a bit better and remaining calm after being a match ball
down and a nervy tie break to take it 15-13. The 4th game was an
exact copy of the 3rd seeing Daniel take it again in a tie break
12-10.
Not much changed in the 5th with Daniel again saving a match
ball and yet again taking it to another tie break to finally
pull off the win 3-2.
After the battle Daniel said: "I was struggling to find my
length on a hot bouncy court in the first two games today and
had to try and adapt if I was going to win. Thankfully I was
able to and managed to pull off one of the closest matches I've
ever played."
