Wed 3nd May, Day
TWO:
Round ONE in St Clement
The fifth edition of the Jersey Squash Classic continued at
Jersey Squash & Racketball Club in St Clement with the
first rounds in the Men’s and Women’s PSA $5k events.
In the men's draw seven of the eight seeded players made it
through to the quarter-finals, with some having to work hard for
their last eight place against qualifiers.
Eighth
seed Nick Mulvey found himself two games down against
qualifier Matt Sidaway, but the effort involved took its toll as
Mulvey eased through the next three games to set up a meeting
with top seed Iker Pajares who beat qualifier Stuart
MacGregor in straight games.
Fourth seed Rui Soares just about survived a brutal
five-game encounter with Welsh qualifier Owain Taylor, saving
match ball in the decider before converting on his second
opportunity.
Second seed Jaymie Haycocks endured the longest match of
the day, taken the full distance by Scottish qualifier Rory
Stewart before prevailing after 84 minutes.
The
sole upset came as Miles Jenkins came from a game down to
beat sixth seed Connor Sheen in four close games, he'll face
Haycocks in the quarters.
Local favourite Charlie Griggs fell in straight games to Finnish
this seed Matias Tuomi, and it was Wales' seventh seed
Emyr Evans who finished the round with a four game win over
'Lucky 'Loser Charlie Cowie.
There were a number of quick wins in the women's draw, local
trio of Sarah and Olivia Taylor and Kate Cadigan all bowing out
in straight games.
The final two matches were produced the only upsets as Lucy
Turmel beat seventh seed Elspeth Young in straight games,
and she'll meet qualifier Lisa Aitken, who beat second
seed Rachael Chadwick in three.
