Jason Foster reports from Dublin ...

The Master's Home Internationals Squash Tournament for Womens Over 35, Mens Over 35 and Mens Over 40 were held at the the impressive Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin between 29-30 April 2005.

Play commenced at 7pm on Friday after the teams had attended a photo call.

Each match was assigned 1 court to play their match on. The order of play was number 5 strings first, followed by number 4, numbers 1, 3 and finally number 2.

England were the hot favourites in all the categories and their first matches were against the host country Ireland.

The toughest match of the night involved England team manager Colin Payne fighting off a spirited performance from Ireland's number 1 Andre Maur to win in five games in the mens over 40's. Colin had a disastrous journey to Ireland arriving a day late after his flight was cancelled on Thursday evening resulting in him having to sleep at the airport!

Scotland played Wales in their first matches.

Pick of the matches there was Ian Fenner-Evans from Wales beating Scotland's Mike Spalding 10-8 in the final game to help secure a 4-1 victory for Wales in the mens over 40's.

Matches began promptly at 10am the next day, England faced Wales and Ireland played Scotland.

England's women over 35's showed their dominance winning all their matches without dropping a game.

Colin Payne was involved in yet another epic match this time holding off the charge of Gary Hales from Wales to win 9-5 in the fifth game.

In the afternoon England faced Scotland and Ireland played Wales in the final cycle of matches.

England's women showed their strength in depth by resting some of their star players to beat Scotland.

Ireland Ladies defeated Wales 5-0 to secure second place in the competition behind England.

In the mens over 35's Tony Burns from Scotland played superbly to overcome England's number 2 string Karl Hardy in four games but this was to no avail as England led by captain Guy Olby went on to win the match 4-1 finishing ahead of Scotland who came second.

England men over 40's beat Scotland 5-0 to win the competition ahead of Wales who had beaten Ireland 4-1 to finish in second place.

On Saturday evening all players, guests and officials attended the presentation dinner at the Fitzwilliam Club.

The evening was co-ordinated by Irish Squash Masters Administrator John O'Connor who thanked all the people involved particularly Tournament Director Patrick Murray for a highly successful weekend of squash.
