'Incredibly Happy' England Win European Junior Title
Full Story
England are European championships for the 21st year in a
row after beating Germany in the final of the European
Junior U19 Team Squash Championships in Sweden.
"We're
incredibly happy," said team manager Mike Harris
after the England squad comprehensively despatched second
seeds Germany 3/0 at the Bellevuestadion in Malmo to come
through the tournament without dropping a single match.
"The players were completely relaxed, but utterly focussed,
throughout this campaign - and it's been a long haul, some
ten days or so - so they are now looking forward to
celebrating, and deservedly so," added Harris.
"Three of the squad - James Wright, Tom Richards and Jenna
Gates - have now played for the last time as juniors, so
this was their moment of glory."

England claim 21st Euro U19 Team Title
England maintained their tight grip on the European Junior U19
Team Championships title by defeating Germany in the final in
Malmo, Sweden, to claim the trophy for the 21st successive year
since 1984.
After beating seventh seeds Netherlands in the quarter-finals,
then hosts Sweden in the semi-finals - both by 3/0 margins - the
top-seeded team led by European Junior Individual champion Chris Simpson swept to a maximum points 3/0 victory over
second seeds Germany at the Bellevuestadion.
It was the seventh final meeting between the two teams - and the
seventh English triumph. The battle opened with a clash between
the teams' number ones - a repeat of the earlier individual final
between Simpson, the 17-year-old England captain, and Germany's
Simon Rosner.
Rosner put up a brave fight - particularly after surviving a
two-hour marathon semi-final against the French No1 Mathieu
Castagnet less than 24 hours earlier! A focussed Simpson, however,
beat Rosner 9-4 9-3 9-6 to put England into the lead.
England No2
James Wright, who was rested for the
semi-finals, clinched the title for the favourites with a
comprehensive 9-4 9-1 9-6 dismissal of Jens Schoor, before
Jenna Gates, runner-up in the women's individual competition,
made sure of a clean sheet by beating Germany's Pamela Hathway 9-0
9-3 - winning the first game in a single hand!
France achieved their seeding by beating hosts Sweden, the fifth
seeds, 2/1 in the play-off for third place.

TOP SEEDS TAKE EURO U19 TITLES
Favourites Chris Simpson,
from England, and Charlie de Rycke, from Belgium, claimed
the men's and women's titles, respectively, in the 16th European
Junior U19 Individual Championships after victories over second

Simpson,
17, from Brighton in Sussex, beat Simon Rosner - the first German
to reach the final for at least nine years - 9-5 9-2 9-10 9-3.
Rosner, also 17, from Wurzburg, was the first player to take a
game from the Englishman in the event.
Simpson
was the tenth English winner of the men's title since the
inaugural championship in 1989.
Charlie de Rycke became only the third player in history to
successfully defend the women's title. In her second successive
victory over an English opponent in the final, the 17-year-old
from Ghent defeated 18-year-old British Junior champion Jenna
Gates 9-4 9-4 9-4.

Top
seeds move into Malmo finals
The top two seeds will contest both the men's and women's finals
of the 16th European Junior U19 Championships after
straightforward semi-final victories at the Bellevuestadion in
Malmo, Sweden.
It was third time lucky for Germany's second seed
Simon Rosner
who beat 5/8 seed Tom Richards after losing to the Englishman in
the event in each of the last two years. Richards, from Weybridge
in Surrey, took the opening game - but the Wurzburg-born
17-year-old fought back to level the match, then cruised to
victory after taking the following two games without dropping a
single point.
Rosner
will face England's top seed Chris Simpson, a semi-finalist
last year. The Guernsey-born 17-year-old from Brighton in Sussex
brushed aside compatriot James Wright, a 3/4 seed from Leicester,
9-6 9-1 9-3 to reach the final without dropping a game.
The women's semi-finals followed a similar path, with Belgian
favourite Charlie de Rycke despatching her English opponent
Rachel Willmott in straight games 9-4 9-0 9-1, while second seed
Jenna Gates, from Brighton, needed four games to overcome
her English compatriot Fiona Moverley 9-4 9-6 1-9 9-3.
The women's final is a true battle of champions, with de Rycke,
the reigning European junior champion, taking on the
recently-crowned British junior champion.

18-Mar-05:
Simpson & De Rycke
Are Favourites In Malmo
England's Chris Simpson and Belgium's Charlie de Rycke
have been nominated as top seeds in the 16th European Junior U19
Individual Championships, which will take place at the
Bellevuestadion in Malmo, Sweden, from 19-22 March.
Simpson's first opponent is Ireland's Rory Byrne. The 17-year-old
from Brighton in Sussex, a semi-finalist last year, is predicted to
meet 3/4 seed James Wright in an all-English semi-final.
Germany's Simon Rosner is second seed in the men's event. His
anticipated semi-final opponent is 3/4 seed Mathieu Castagnet, the
18-year-old Frenchman from Le Mans who came to prominence last year
with an unexpected appearance in the final in Belgium.
Charlie de Rycke is looking to retain the women's title she won for
the first time last year on home soil. The 17-year-old from Ghent is
seeded to face France's 3/4 seed Celia Allamargot in the semi-finals
before a predicted meeting with England's No2 seed Jenna Gates in
the final. The other 3/4 seed, in the bottom half of the draw, is
Camille Serme, who is also from France.
The 22nd European Junior Team Championships follow the individual
event, from 24-27 March, featuring hosts Sweden, defending champions
England, and Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France,
Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Scotland,
Spain, Switzerland and Wales. The seeding for the team event will be
announced during the final stages of the individual event

Last 16 Draws
Favourite Simpson
Leads England's European
Junior Title Defence
Sussex's British Junior
Squash champion Chris Simpson has been selected to lead the
England team in their defence of the title in next week's
European Junior Team Championships in Malmo, Sweden.
Guernsey-born Simpson, 17,
from Brighton in Sussex, is the youngest member of the mixed team
which also includes James Wright, from Leicester; Tom
Richards, from St George's Hill in Surrey; Jenna Gates,
from Brighton; and Rachel Willmott, from Horsham in Sussex.
Simpson, who is making his
third successive appearance for England in the event, is also seeded
to win the European Junior Individual title in Malmo, from 19-22
March. The team competition gets underway on Thursday 24th
March, with the finals on Sunday (27th March).
A pupil at Brighton
College, Simpson was a semi-finalist in the individual event twelve
months ago, and followed his success in the British Junior
Championships in February by also winning the Welsh Junior Open
title in Cardiff.
Wright and Richards are
both making their second England appearances in the European
Championships, while Gates and Willmott are making their debuts.
Jenna and Rachel contested an all-Sussex women's British Junior
final last month in Manchester, with Gates triumphing to deny
Willmott her seventh British Junior National trophy.
"Whilst we taking nothing
for granted, particularly with strong opposition from countries like
Germany and France, we are quietly optimistic at our chances of
retaining the title," said Team Manager Michael Harris, the
England Squash High Performance Coach. "All our players are
playing well at the moment, and all have got good draws in the
individual event."
