Botwright comeback gives
Pontefract women's title
English ladies champions Pontefract claimed the European Club title
in Malmo after a remarkable recovery from their number one Becky
Botwright against L'Hermine's Laurence Bois.
Kirsty McPhee, playing at number three, got the Yorkshire side off
to a fine start as she recovered from a game down to beat Sonia
Pasteris.
It looked as though the match would go to a decider when, in the top
string, Bois took the first two games against Botwright. The
Pontefract number one battled back to take the third, but then found
herself 8/1 matchball down in the fourth before staging another
recovery to win the game 10/8.
Botwright, who was also the Pontefract heroine in the semi-finals,
carried the momentum into the fifth as she raced away to give
'Ponte' the title, leaving Lauren Siddall to beat Charlotte Delsinne
in the dead rubber.

Stuttgart maintain
German tradition ...
It wasn't to be an English doubler though, as Stuttgart beat
Bishop's Stortford 3-1 to keep the title in German hands for the
fourth successive year.
Joey Barrington got Stuttgart off to a flying start with a
straight-games win over Daryl Selby, but Anthony Ricketts levelled
the match, recovering from a game down to beat Gregory Gaultier.
Stuttgart needed a 3/0 win to take the title, and Patrick Gaessler
duly delivered with a superb performance against Galen Le Cheminant
- shrugging off the need to switch to a traditional court when the
centre's lights failed mid-way through the second game.
It was left to Simon Baker to complete the formalities as Stuttgart
collected the trophy, still on the traditional court ...

Bishops Stortford oust the Champions ... on double countback !!
We have nothing direct from Sweden, but Fritz Borchert relays
news of a sensational ending to one of the men's semi-finals.
Title holders Paderborn took on English challengers Bishops
Stortford, and at the end of a tight match the German three-time
champions were declared the winners on points countback.
But, following a recount, it was discovered that the teams were
equal on points, and it came down to the winner of the first string
tie. Bishop's Stortford's Anthony Ricketts' win over Paderborn's
Peter Nicol thus took the English Champions into the final to end
Paderborn's three-year reign as European champions.
In a double blow for Germany, women's title-holders ISC Bordesholm
also crashed out, losing 2-1 to French outfit L'Hermine Rennes,
who now take on England's Pontefract, who will appear in
their fifth successive final, thanks largely to a 10-9 in the fifth
win by number one Becky Botwright.
