Abbas Takes COAS Crown

Mohammed Abbas overcame Ramy Ashour to capture the title in the fourth COAS International at the Mushaf squash complex  in Islamabad.

Second seed Abbas took control of the match right from the beginning and displayed some excellent forehand and backhand drives in the first game that finished 11-4. There was a close contest between the two Egyptians in the second game, as it was level at 5-5 and went neck to neck till 9-8. World Junior Champion Ashour won it 11-9 thus equalising the match.

Ashour toiled hard to recover an 8-1 deficit in the 3rd game, but failed to catch Abbas, who eventually won the game 11-7. The fourth game was level at 3-3 but Ramy errors handed the advantage to Abbas as he took the game 11-5 to win the title - the second of his career after taking his first back in early 2000.

Ramy Races On In Islamabad

Just 24 hours after winning his opening match of the tournament in just 11 minutes, Egypt's world junior champion Ramy Ashour raced to a straight games victory in today's quarter-finals of the COAS Squash International at the Roshan Khan Squash Centre in Islamabad, Pakistan, in only 15 minutes!

The 18-year-old from Cairo beat Arshad Iqbal Burki, the sixth seed from Pakistan, 11-2, 11-1, 11-4. The fourth seed will now face top seed Shahid Zaman for a place in the final.

Zaman, who will lead Pakistan's squad in next week's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, beat eighth-seeded compatriot Khayal Muhammad Khan 11-7, 11-9, 11-5.

The other semi-final will also be an Egyptian/Pakistani clash, between second seed Mohammed Abbas, from Cairo, and Mansoor Zaman, the third seed from Peshawar. Zaman ended qualifier Majid Khan's run, beating his fellow Pakistani 9-11, 11-5, 11-5, 10-11, 11-5, while Abbas despatched India's seventh seed Ritwik Bhattacharya 11-3, 11-1, 11-8.

“Mansoor was a tough opponent and I had to struggle to overcome the Pakistan’s number 2.

"However, he had played five-game matches in the earlier two encounters while I had played only six games in two matches, that is why he was more tired than me. This was a major difference in this match.”

to the Daily Times

“Although Mohammad is like my brother I will play a positive game in the final to win the crown of this international championship.

“Victory here would help me get into the top 20s. My actual goal is to be among the top 10 in about a year’s time.”
