Day One, Part Two -
seeds safely through
The story of the evening session is that it's the top eight
seeds through to the quarters, generally without too much
trouble, but there's been some intriguing games nonetheless.
Barbados's Defending champion Gavin Cumberbatch opened up
the evening's action on the men's side, cracking some lovely
winners towards the end of his match with Micah Franklin, the
CASA Junior Champion.
Top seed and home favourite Dean Watson was made to work
hard by Mark Sealey, sneaking the first on extra points and just
about holding off the Barbadian in the next two.
The men's action finished with two Cayman youngsters trying to
upset the seedings, but Jake Kelly could only take one game
against the equally-speedy Bryant Cumberbatch, and
Cameron Stafford fell in straight games to Jamaica's Chris
Binnie.
The women's draw saw the top seeds enter the fray, and all eight
came safely through in straight games, conserving energy for the
possibility of two rounds tomorrow.
[5/8] Gavin Cumberbatch (Bar) bt
[9/16] Micah Franklin (Ber)
11/5, 11/3, 11/6
“I like to run, and I enjoy an open game with two palyers who
respect each other and are willing to go round to get the ball,
that was good.
“Micah played well to win the Junior CASA this year, beating
some very good players. I certainly don’t feel old, but I’m
giving him 10 years and it’s going to get harder and harder, so
you don’t want to go the distance with juniors at this stage, I
was glad to get off in three.”
[2] Shawn Simpson
(Bar) bt [9/16] Ryan Abraham (T&T)
11/6, 11/3, 11/4
“He
was too steady for me. He was able to maintain the pace and
consistency, and it was me making the unforced error first.
"I would have liked a better run, but when you come up against
the second seed you know it’s going to be tough. He was just
better today …”
[1] Dean Watson
(Cay) bt
[9/16] Mark Sealy (Ber)
12/10, 11/8, 11/7
“Being number one seed doesn’t worry me, but it’s very warm on
there! It was a tough match, no excuses, you play as you play
and do the best you can.
"I knew beforehand that his game was exactly the opposite of
what I like, but it’s given me a good runout before tomorrow.”

[3/4] Denise Sommers
(Ber) bt
[9/16] Brooke Burrowes (Jam)
11/7, 11/4, 11/5
“I’ve been in Bermuda as National Coach for three and a half
years, so qualified for the first time this year … I didn’t come
to lose …”
Denise Sommers
[5/8] Rhea Khan (T&T) bt
[9/16] Amy Gellizeau (T&T)
11/7,
11/7, 11/6
"It’s good to get through to the quarters. I’ve played Karen
many times, and lost many times, but tomorrow’s another day …”
[2] Karen Meakins
(Bar) bt [9/16] Nakita Poon Kong (T&T)
11/3, 11/3, 11/5
“I’ve lost in the last two finals, to Nicolette in 2005 and to
Karen Anderson in 2007, so it would be nice to keep the run of
reaching the final going, and even better to win it!”
[3/4] Cheri-Ann Parris (Bar) bt [9/16] Lauren Mahfood (Jam)
11/4, 11/4,
11/2
“After winning six Junior CASA titles, it was my last one this
year, so now I have to do well in the seniors!”
