Claire's
Trials...
Claire Baker, assistant manager at
Wimbledon and Tournament Director, has had a few problems to solve in this
year's event ...

Issue 6:
Finals Sunday
Steph
Brind bt Laura Lengthorn 0/9 5/9 10/8 9/2 9/6 (59m)
It looked at the beginning that Laura was going to win 3/0 before Steph got
going. 9-0 first game, Steph only getting two handouts.
Then went 8-0 down in the second before Steph actually looked like she wanted
to play. Long hard rallies throughout. The third very close almost point for
point.
Marcus Berrett bt Ong Beng Hee 11/5 11/4 8/11 11/7 (51m)
What a great game, Marcus's drop shot were ungettable!
Counter drops were excellent from both players. Long chasing rallies....
retrieval from both players were brilliant. Marcus just seemed quicker & was
reading the ball well. Berrett did go 7-2 up in the third but Beng Hee wasn't
ready to finish just yet, and played good hard crosscourts from the front of
the court.
2-1 and it still looked like game on. But Marcus just stepped up again, 6-2 up
gaining in confidence, 9-4. Finished on a stroke... of bad luck for Ong Beng
Hee.

Issue 5:
Saturday Evening
Saturday evening capped off a very good day! No
broken windows, no further delays, England won the rugby, Chelsea won 4-1 (yes
I do!), Framboise came to watch the semis - Earl Grey tea & a sandwich at the
ready - and I watched Steve Meads warm up for 20 mins!!!!

Issue 4:
Saturday Morning
It's a lovely day ... outside anyway. The ladies have finished, all turned up
on time... However, Dan & Peter are just starting their second game.....!!! Mr
Jenson was a little late!
He asked for directions at Earls Court and some one gave him direction to
Cranbrook Road in West London! I didn't know there was another Cranbrook, must
look it up sometime... Peter said he was keen to play the match so was
prepared to wait.. good chap!
Looking like it's going with the seeds for the ladies and the men where Marcus
is looking fit and ready... and of course Ong Beng Hee!

Issue 3: Friday Night
Well it's been a long day, good, eventful excellent squash!
Mr Beng Hee is looking awesome! I won't give you my other predictions as you
can never tell in this game! Iain Higgins is also making a good comeback, mean
& lean!
Ok I know I shouldn't have played it but what else could I do. Lizzie Leitch
couldn't play the match tomorrow, she had a flight to catch which had been
altered previously as Kirsty McPhee retired hurt.
Instead of just giving Pam a walkover I agreed to play it tonight. Sorry
please don't shoot me!

Issue 2: Friday
Afternoon
Forgot to tell you, some horrible little kids threw a large piece of
concrete through a pane of glass in the gym! Glass everywhere, by the time I
got to the gym the kids had run off.... no I'm not that slow its just that by
the time they told me it was already too late... The local police took two 1/2
hours to answer their phone!
Then I had to get Becks on the internet to get a glazier down. That why I
don't work out in a gym!
Two matches to go and I'll be back ... Oh my monies on Mr Hee... bloddy (not
allowed to swear) brilliant. He doesn't even have to move away from the tee! I
could only dream of playing like that!

Issue 1: Thurdsay Night
We queried why Shahid Khan and Phil Rushworth played each other twice, in
qualifying and the main draw ...
Well it's like this..... Robbie Temple pulled out last minute, Oliver Davidson
pulled... I Couldn't get a reserve... then Tim Naylor said he couldn't play
the next round anyway so.... I got Naylor & Schonborn to play each other as
they were here and used the first slot for Khan & Rushworth...
Instead of playing the game at 12.45 on Friday we played Thursday at 20.45
only because Shahid Khan didn't return my call!!! I think that was it!
How about this then..... I got a replacement ( Lisa May) as Jenny Wright
pulled out because when I phoned Lizzie Leitch to tell her not to be here
until later she was already on her way down from Glasgow! And she really
wanted to play someone.
While Lizzie was on the phone she said would it be possible to get Kirsty to
play a little say 4pm as she had a plane to catch at 8pm Stanstead. So I
phoned Kirsty (a few times) then she replied yes. Then ....my replacement (who
was originally going to be late anyway ) .. didn't ring me (I tried her 4/5
times) eventually got through and said she was in Loughborough!!!!
With 10 mins until her later time left... she was out... so I explained to
Lizzie and as she held out before having lunch ... went ~~~~***** ! ( no she
was calm really). So we got Kirsty to play at 3.30pm they both agreed.
Then.... You'll like this... Kirsty McPhee pulled ut with a bad back!
Oh my god why oh why... so Lizzie on the internet trying to change
flight...can't so we've now asked Pam Nimmo (should she win) whether she could
play late to night!!! All this just to see her boyfriend!!!!
I'll let you know what happens!
