Berrett & Lengthorn
take Tynemouth titles
Yorkshire's Marcus Berrett claimed his second BSPA title in the Proctor Memorial at Tynemouth, beating second seed Peter Genever in the final, having beaten top seed Nick Taylor in the semis.

"I'm concentrating more on coaching these days," said Berrett, the seven-time Yorkshire champion, "but I'm playing well at the moment and had a good run this weekend."

Genever started badly in all three games, and paid the price for his errors. "Too many in the tin," he said.

The women's final was an all-Lancashire affair, with Laura Lengthorn beating Becky Botwright to claim her first BSPA title. Second seed Lengthorn got off to a slow start, dropping the first game as she had in the previous two rounds, but pulled her game together to lead 2-1. Lengthorn opened up what looked to be a winning lead in the fourth, but Botwright clawed her way back to 7-all before a tense finish.

Taylor tops Tynemouth Draw
Manchester's Nick Taylor tops a bumper draw for the first BSPA Grand Prix event of the season at Tynemouth. Taylor, the 2000 champion, is joined by Peter Genever, Stephen Meads and Marcus Berrett in the top four seedings. With a total of 41 entries qualifying is required on the Thursday evening, with all the 'locals' involved.

Top seeds in the women's events are Essex's Lauren Briggs and Yorkshire's Laura Lengthorn.

The Proctor Memorial is one of the oldest events in the UK, running since 1957 in honour of a club member, James Napier Proctor, who died when his car went over the cliffs at Tynemouth.

Over the years there have been many famous winners, with former England Captain Bryan Beeson winning a clutch of titles, and in more recent years David Campion, Mark Chaloner, Nick Taylor, Derek Ryan, Lee Beachill, Tim Garner and Ong Beng Hee have laid claim to the men's title.

A women's event was added in 1997, with local former England player Jane Martin winning three titles, and Cassie Jackman, Jenny Tranfield and Madeline Perry also on the honours board.

The Proctor was added to the BSPA circuit two seasons ago, and the club offers a warm North-East welcome to all players, plus easy access to the famous weekend delights of Whitley Bay and Newcastle if required ...
