Companion Title for Parke
Sam Miller reports
Simon
Parke confirmed his position as Companion allpay.net Open Champion
2006, defeating Andy Whipp in straight games to take the title in
little over 40 minutes.
Andy didn't seem to be quite up to usual standards, hitting 4/5 tins in
each game, and this was exacerbated by a back strain that manifested
itself early during the third game. In contrast, Simon was playing
tight, controlled squash and moving well to boot. He never looked in
trouble and seemed to be happy playing a patient game, waiting for the
seemingly inevitable error or loose ball.
I think Simon learnt from yesterday's game with Steve Coppinger that
these courts down here respond well to a good length and a high pace is
not always the best way to play them.
The event was enjoyed enormously by the members and sponsors alike.
Congratulations to Simon, a deserved winner and we look forward to
hosting everyone again next year.

End of the Road for Joel
Sam Miller reports
Andy Whipp won a tough 3-0, beating a jaded Joel Hinds in the
evening semi-finals at Hereford Whitecross.
Joel,
having played BUSA earlier today, was unable to take a game, although the
final two games both went to tie breaks.
In the final Andy will play second seed Simon Parke, who defeated a
very tired Peter Billson in four games.
The first two were comfortable, with Pete making a mini revival in the
third. The tank was empty for the fourth however, as Parke took it to
love.
We look forward to a highly contested final tomorrow which runs from 3pm.

Parke Survives Coppinger Challenge
Sam Miller reports
Some
fabulous matches this afternoon. Joel Hinds beat Lewis Walters
3-1, which saw Lewis have his front two teeth knocked out. I didn't see it
but apparently he was crowding Joel and copped one. This was in the second
game, and all credit to him, he carried on to the finish. We found the
teeth and hopefully he'll be smiling again soon!
Andy Whipp beat Tom Richards three one, Tom fading a little
towards the end of the match.
Peter Billson beat me 3-2 in an hour and ten. I was two games up,
saving three game balls in the second but with two tiring players was
unable to find that extra gear.
The
match of the afternoon was Simon Parke against Steve Coppinger.
Simon won the first game but was taken by surprise due to Steve's fitness,
shot play and tenacity. He took the next two games and it took a
concentrated effort from Simon to come through the match in five. A touch
of relief at the end for sure!
Huge credit to Steve, he'll be upsetting the seeds in the forthcoming
BSPA's; you have my word.

Semis
will be at 7.30 and 8.30 pm tonight.

Round One/Two:
Barrington
limps out in Hereford
Top seed Joey Barrington was forced to withdraw injured on the first day's
play of the Companion allPay.net Open. After cruising through his first
round against Colin Edwards, Barrington had to allow Lewis Walters
an unopposed passage into Saturday's quarters.
The top half of the draw is stacked with youngsters - Lewis faces Joel
Hinds, who uspet 5/8 seed Shahid Khan, while Tom Richards meets
the experienced Andy Whipp.
No worries for the seeds in the bottom half as second seed Simon Parke
is set to face Steve Coppinger, while tournament organiser Sam
Miller faces Peter Billson. |
