Top
seeds meet unexpected opposition
as Perry and Handley clinch GP titles
While top seeds Madeline Perry and Adrian Grant came through
to the finals in Thames Ditton, both will meet unexpected opposition as
they aim to take the titles in the richest BSPA event of the season.
In the women's event Perry eased past Scottish number one Frania
Gillen-Buchert in the morning quarter-finals before taking on fellow
Irishwoman Aisling Blake in the semis, where she completed another
straight games win.
In the final Perry will face Australia's Kasey Brown, who overcame
second seed Laura Lengthorn in three close games. Perry and
Lengthorn were neck and neck at the top of the Grand Prix standings,
so Perry's win confirms her as Grand Prix champion for 2006/07.
In the race for the men's Grand Prix three contenders entered the
quarter-finals, but Peter Barker's shock morning defeat to Ben
Ford ruled him out of contention, leaving overnight leader Scott
Handley and Simon Parke. Parke fell at the hands of top seed
Grant while Handley scored a fine 3/2 win over Azlan Iskandar,
grabbing the the overall title in the process.
That was as far as Scott got though, as he too found Grant too much to
cope with, and Ford was unable to repeat his morning heroics as Joey
Barrington brushed him aside to reach his first BSPA final of the
season.

Big
Guns through to
Colets Quarters
No shocks so far as the top seeds in both events are through to the
quarter-finals of the season's richest BSPA event, boasting fields that
would do justice to many middle-ranking PSA and WISPA events.
The three contenders for the men's overall GP title, Scott Handley,
Simon Parke and Peter Barker are all in action, while the
women's event sees Madeline Perry and Laura Lengthorn in
line for a title-deciding final.
