An Early Start ...
Just 102 matches today, with six courts in solid use from 9am to
10pm (well, not exactly true - the 15.00 slot on court 10 was
free!).
The morning saw first round matches in all events, with the seeds
taking to the court for the afternoon/evening second rounds, all
events getting down to the last 16 by the end of play.

Surprise ...
Not too many upsets today, but
special mentions as follows:
Girls 15: Lauren Tamilla, Lauren West and
Issie Norman-Ross all beat 9/16 seeds in their second matches of
the day.
Boys 15: Declan Osborn, Jonathan Honeyman and
Oliver Horton also navigated their first round matches before
going on to beat 9/16 seeds, while Ross McDonald put out 5/8
seed Peter Joyce in an hour-long five-game match.
Girls 19: Natalie Dodd claimed the scalp of her 9/16 seeded
opponent Emma Wardle, while Hannah Carey progressed via a
walkover against 5/8 seed Carrie Ramsey.
Boys
19: A few 'expected surprises' as Neil Cordell beat 9/16
seed Philip Bull, Nick Hopcroft downed 9/16 Robert Downer,
and Richard Underhill beat an under-the-weather 9/16 Oliver
Dixon. The last match of the day, finishing at 10.30, saw Chris
Rusling surprise 9/16 Morgan Hubberd with a 3/1 win in 52
minutes.
No let up ...
Saturday's schedule is just as hectic, but we're unlikely to see the
likes of the 9, 11, 12-minute matches of today, so a late night (and
some match coverage!) is in store.
Dave's
Half Dozen
Wycliffe are always
well-represented at top-level junior events, an this is no
exception, although supremo Dave Morrish is looking forward to "less
baby-sitting" as this time he's brought a squad of six, all in the
under 19 categories ...

Preview:
Now for the Juniors ...
Just
a week after the nation's top seniors have battled
for supremacy in the National Championships, it is
now the turn of the juniors - as 170 of the
country's best young players compete in the
Tecnifibre British Under 19 & 15 Squash
Championships at Nottingham Squash Club,
from 22-24 February.
Tecnifibre have become the headline sponsors of the
British Junior National Squash Championships until
the end of the 2010/11 season, following the
conclusion of a three-year England Squash agreement
with Smash Sports Limited, distributors of the brand
in the UK & Ireland.
Adrian
Waller (Hertfordshire) and Victoria Lust
(Bedfordshire) are seeded to retain the Don
Sanderson Under 19 titles they won last year at the
National Squash Centre in Manchester. Waller, who
has won British titles at all four age categories,
will be renewing his great rivalry with No2 seed and
former Under 17 champion Joe Lee (Surrey),
whom he pipped to last year's title.
Lust, who has three British titles to her name,
starts as hot favourite in the Girls' Under 19s -
but will face fierce opposition from the current
Under 17 holder Kimberley Hay (Northumbria),
Sarah-Jane Perry (Warwickshire) and
Victoria Bell (Cumbria), who has now returned to
fitness after a long injury lay off.
In the Boys' Under 15 category, British Junior Open
semi-finalists David Wardle (Surrey) and
Oliver Holland (Nottinghamshire) are seeded to
meet in Sunday’s final. Sophie Lemom (Essex)
is the top seed in the Girls' Under 15s, but will
have to overcome opposition from Jemma Ockwell
(Hertfordshire), Emily Whitlock (Cheshire)
and Katie Smith (Yorkshire) if she is to add
the Under 15 crown to the Under 13 title she won
back in 2005.
The Championships involve a heavy schedule at
Nottingham SRC with matches running from 9.00am on
Friday 22 February with the finals scheduled for the
afternoon of Sunday 24 February. Any visiting
spectators will be welcomed free of charge. |
