Friday 2nd Nov, Day ONE:
Down to the quarters in Manchester
A
busy day in Manchester comprised two round of play in each of
the eight events at two venues as the quarter-finalists of the
2012 edition of the Tecnifibre British Junior Squash
Championships were decided.
It was generally a good day for the seeds, with 31 of those
seeded in the top four winning through to tomorrow’s
quarter-finals.
The exception was Lancashire’s Matt Sidaway, seeded 3/4 in the
Boys U19, who lost out 13-11, 11-6, 12-10 to Angus Gillams,
the 9/16 seed from Herts. Gillams is joined in the last eight by
fellow 9/16 seed Scott Young from Gloucestershire, who
beat 5/8 seed Joseph Green 11-9, 11-4, 13-11
Top
seeds Oliver Holland and Tom Ford both came safely
through, and are joined in the last eight by world junior
team-mate Taminder Gata-Aura, the remaining 3/4 seed.
No surprises in the Girls U19 where defending champion Emily
Whitlock took time off from her WSA tour duties to
resume a junior career which ends in January's British Junior
Open. Second seed Victoria Temple-Murray faces Emily
Peach, who ousted 5/8 seed Georgina Ingham in an up and down
five-setter.
Other players to exceed their seedings to reach the
quarter-finals were Amber Marshall (G13), Megan Kaye
(G15), Mark Richmond (B15) and Owain Taylor (B17),
all seeded in the 9/16 bracket.
Top U17 seeds survive testers
On
paper the top seeds in the U17 events, George Parker and
Lucy Beecroft, both had tricky last sixteen encounters at
the NSC this afternoon.
Parker was up against Patrick Rooney, the former U15 champion
seeded a lowly 9/16. Parker won 11/5, 11/6, 11/7 but it wasn’t
easy.
“He played really well and put up a good fight,” said Parker.
“He likes a quick crosscourt game so I knew I needed to keep it
straight but I was playing into his hands sometimes.
"It was a tough game, I’m pleased to win that 3/0.”
Beecroft
faced long-tine rival Katie Wilson, also seeded 9/16 after being
off the circuit for a while but still a very dangerous
proposition.
“I grew up playing her so I knew it wouldn’t be easy,” admitted
Beecroft who won 11/9, 11/6, 11/8. “It went ok, I’m glad to get
that one out of the way.
"It took me a while to get used to the glass court but I’ll have
to as all my matches are scheduled on there!”
A few upsets at the end
It
was getting late in the day before the seeds started falling at
the NSC, but three fell in quick succession as Scott Young
beat B19 5/8 seed Joseph Green in a 52-minute three games,
Angus Gillams did even better in beating local 3/4 seed Matt
Sidaway, and in the G19 Emily Peach prevailed in five
games over 5/8 seed Georgina Ingham.

Northern: Boys under 13 Round 1
Charlie Green is on a comeback, after being England under
11 no° 1 and then having a year out he come back today and beat
9/16 seed Daniel Wells 3-0, after beating James Brick at
the National Sports Centre yesterday to qualify for this
weekend's tournament.
He felt that the tournament is good fun and a great experience
to get back into the sport after his time off. Next he is to
play the Welsh no° 1 Jordan Wells.

Oscar Khoo played Lewis Anderson, winning 3-1.
Without
stepping foot on court for the last four weeks due to school
commitments, 12 year old Oscar Khoo battled with his match
fitness to sneak a win. Oscar admits he did not play as well as
he would have liked to but was still pleased with his win.
His coach added “Oscar must learn to listen to my instructions
to become a better player”.

Boys U13 R2
Jordan Williams played Charlie Green, and although
Jordan took the match 3-0, credit must be given to Charlie for
his undying attitude. Unfortunately, about half way through the
match Charlie was getting frustrated, Jordan said this made him
think he was “getting on top of the game”. His coach added he
was “playing well” and will have a “good chance” in his next
game.
Richard Hall and Sam Todd had a very long and
close game. Richard narrowly won 3-2. Richard commented saying
it was a “really really hard match” and he had a “good
opponent”. He and Sam are good friends which always makes the
match a nice one to watch. Richard’s next match is against
Jarred Carter, he thinks it might be a close game.
