Australian National Team Championships 2008
19-21 Sep, Woden Squash Centre, Canberra

21-Sep-08:
Queensland defend teams title

Top seeded Queensland successfully defended their National Teams Squash Championship title on Sunday when they beat South Australia in the final at the Woden Squash Centre in Canberra.

Former Australian junior champion Peta Hughes got the Queenslanders away to a good start when she beat Alma Kushartanti in straight games, before Zac Alexander and Samantha Davies beat Justin Beard and Kirsty Geue respectively.

Queensland No.1 Steve Finitsis was not needed for the tie as the defending champions justified their top seeding with the victory.

New South Wales beat Victoria 3/1 to clinch third place while the ACT downed Tasmania by the same score in the battle for the fifth and sixth.

Western Australia finished in seventh position.

20-Sep-08:
Queensland to meet SA
in Australian Teams final

Top seeded Queensland will play second ranked South Australia in Sunday’s final of the National Teams Squash Championship being played at the Woden Squash Centre in Canberra.

Queensland cruised through their pool after wins over Victoria and the ACT, while South Australia were pushed all the way by runners-up New South Wales before topping Pool B.

SA and NSW drew their deciding rubber 2/2, but the South Australians went through after winning two more games than their New South Wales opponents.

That meant NSW were up against Queensland in the semi-finals, while SA had the easier task against Victoria.

Queensland then beat NSW 3/1 and South Australia accounted for Victoria by the same margin.

Sunday’s final should be a close affair, with both teams able to put out PSA tour players in the men’s matches, while neither team has as much depth in the women’s draw.

Queensland’s Steve Finitsis and Brad Freeme will most likely face up against Justin Beard and Jason Mudge in two evenly matched rubbers.

The women’s rubbers should feature former top ranked Australian junior Peta Hughes, who retired from the sport unexpectedly last year but has been enticed back by Queensland, against one of the rising South Australian players Alma Kushartanti or Bonny Wu.

Victoria and NSW will play off for third and fourth, while Tasmania will take on the ACT for fifth and sixth.
Western Australia finished in seventh.

19-Sep:
NSW pushing SA at teams

New South Wales and South Australia will play off tomorrow in a crucial tie to see who tops their pool at the National Teams Squash Championship being played at the Woden Squash Centre in Canberra.

The two states are unbeaten in Pool B after day one of the championships and the winner of their clash on Saturday will determine who tops the pool and avoids a probable semi-final clash with top seeded Queensland.

Queensland beat Victoria in their only match today and will play the ACT on Saturday.
The defending champions, who will bring their No.1 Steve Finitsis in for the ACT clash, have also enticed former Australian junior champion Peta Hughes out of her early retirement to strengthen their women’s line-up.
