NSC Satellite No 1
 2007
04 -08 Apr, Kuala Lumpur, $4k

08-Apr-07, Finals:
Au & Adnan Junior win
NSC Satellite Titles

Malaysia's Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan and Hong Kong's Annie Au clinched the titles in the NSC Squash Satellite No1 after contrasting wins in the finals of the inaugural event at the NSC Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Second seed Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan was facing his older brother Nafzahizam Adnan, the fifth seed who ousted Hong Kong's No1 seed Wai Hang Wong in the quarter-finals.

It was the pair's third meeting on the PSA Tour, but their first in a final - and it was 20-year-old Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan who ultimately prevailed after 78 minutes, winning the first Tour title of his career.

The women's climax also saw first-time WISPA glory for Annie Au.  The 18-year-old notched up her fourth successive international title - albeit her first WISPA - when she defeated Malaysia's top seed Delia Arnold in 42 minutes.

It was in February that Au became the Asian Junior champion for the first time - success which she followed by winning the Welsh Junior Open title, then the Austrian Junior Open crown last month.

07-Apr-07, Semis:
Adnan Brothers battle into
KL Satellite
final

The men's final of the NSC Squash Satellite No1 at the NSC Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, will not only be an all-Malaysian affair, but also the first PSA final between two brothers for eighteen months.

Both Nafzahizam Adnan and his younger brother Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan won their semi-finals in five games after fighting back from behind.

Nafzahizam, the 22-year-old fifth seed, needed 53 minutes to overcome Egyptian qualifier Wael Farag to make it to a PSA Tour final for the first time.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Mohd Nafiizwan, the No2 seed, fought for 68 minutes to beat Hong Kong's third seed Dick Lau to reach the second Tour final of his career.

The final will be the siblings' third Tour clash, with honours shared to date.  They follow Egypt's Ashour brothers Hisham and Ramy, who contested the Athens Open final in October 2005.

Malaysia will also be represented in the women's WISPA World Tour event final after favourite Delia Arnold beat compatriot Wee Wern Low, the sixth seed.

Despite the seeding predicting an all-Malaysian final, Arnold will meet Hong Kong's Annie Au after the 18-year-old third seed upset No2 seed Lim Yoke Wah in 50 minutes to reach the maiden WISPA final of her career.

Adnan Strikes out Top Seed
Wong
in KL Satellite

Two Malaysian brothers are on course to meet in the final of the NSC Satellite No1 squash event after Nafzahizam Adnan scored a notable upset over Hong Kong's top seed Wai Hang Wong in the quarter-finals at the NSC Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Fifth seed Adnan, 22, took 53 minutes to record his shock victory to earn a place in the semi-finals.

In the other half of the draw, younger brother Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan defeated fellow countryman Elvinn Keo.  Seeded two, 20-year-old Nafiizwan will now meet Hong Kong's third seed Dick Lau for a place in the final.

In the women's WISPA World Tour event, Malaysia's Wee Wern Low also recorded a significant upset over a Hong Kong opponent when she beat fourth seed Joey Chan - avenging her defeats by the higher-ranked player in both the individual and team events in the Asian Junior Championships in February.

Wee Wern Low now faces top seed Delia Arnold in an all-Malaysian semi-final.

05-Apr-07, Round One:
Cheng Yao Huang
records
historic win in Malaysia

Cheng Yao Huang became the first player from Chinese Taipei to record a victory on the PSA tour when he upset sixth seed Roger Ngan in the first round of the NSC Satellite No1 at the NSC Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The 21-year-old qualifier, ranked 334 in the world, defeated his experienced Hong Kong opponent in 44 minutes.  Cheng Yao Huang's opponent in the quarter-finals will also be a qualifier - Egypt's Wael Farag, who fought back from 2/1 down to beat Malaysia's No4 seed Shahril Shahidan in 53 minutes.

There was local delight in the women's event when Malaysian qualifier Raja Nurul Sarah, in her maiden appearance in a WISPA event, upset Ayten Kececi, the No7 seed from Turkey to earn a surprise last eight berth.  Sarah's opponent will be third seed Annie Au, the Asian Junior Champion from Hong Kong, who despatched Malaysia's Nessrine Ariffin.

Wee Wern looks to NSC upsets

Top national women’s junior player Low Wee Wern feels that she is up to the task of creating upsets in the National Sports Council (NSC) Satellite No. 1 tournament at the National Squash Centre. The qualifying rounds will be played today and the tournament proper begins tomorrow. The 16-year-old Wee Wern is seeded seventh in the tournament and will play against a qualifier in the first round.

The Penangite is well aware that a good result in the tournament will help her break into the top 100 in the world rankings. In the latest rankings released two days ago, Wee Wern moved up 37 rungs to number 105.

“The past few months have been very good for me. The introduction of weight training in my routines has allowed me to make big strides in the game,” she said.

“I reached the semi-finals of the NSC Challenger last week, losing to Lim Yoke Wah in five games. I will get a better picture of my standard against the back-up players in the NSC tournament. The tournament also allows me test out some of the things I have learnt over the past few months.”

In the NSC tournament, Wee Wern is tipped to meet Hong Kong’s Joey Chan in the quarter-finals. If she advances, she is expected to play against top seeded compatriot Delia Arnold.

Meanwhile, three players have withdrawn from the tournament. Fourth-seeded Malaysian Siti Munirah Jusoh has pulled out of the women’s competition because of injury. The men’s third seed, Timothy Arnold of Malaysia, is also out because of injury. Eighth-seeded Australian Duncan Walsh has also opted out.
