Keith Grainger Memorial UCT Open 2017
23-28 Apr, Cape Town, South Africa, $5k

It's an Egyptian double in Cape Town:

A packed UCT court 1 witnessed yet another great evening of squash.

In the PSA women’s final between local Cape Townian no 3 seed Alexandra Fuller and no 7 seed Egyptian Menna Hamed.

Alex raced to a 2-0 lead and seemed in total control. There was a collision in the 3rd game that seemed to rattle Alex and she lost the game 6-11. Menna came out firing in the 4th with renewed energy having picked up a game and clinched the 4th. She continued this pressure and won the 5th picking up her 2nd PSA Title.

In the PSA men’s final Mohamed ElSherbini continued his amazing run in South Africa clinching his 3rd straight PSA title in 3 weeks. He beat South African no 3 seed Tristan Eysele in 29min, 3-0.

He now heads up to Johannesburg to play in the new tournament on the circuit, the Bull Ring….can he make 4 from 4 and having to fight through the qualifiers again…..

Cape Town semis:
Fuller and Sherbini head to finals

In the Women’s Draw 7th seed Menna Hamed from Egypt toppled the no1 seed Nikki Todd 3-2 in 54 min seeking revenge after losing to her in the Ukrainian Final last year 3-2. This will be Menna’s 4th PSA final in her 3 years on the tour having recently won the Riga Open and so has one title under the belt.

Local Cape Townian Alexandra Fuller took 40min to beat Menna Nasser 3-1 in the other semi-final to the delight of the home crowd.

Alex will be playing in her 4th PSA final having clinched 2 titles to date, coming off a recent win in the Assore & Balwin Parkview Open 2017 in Gauteng South Africa.

In the Men’s Draw Tristan Eysele ended South African qualifier Gary Wheadon's amazing run in the tournament with a 3-0 win.

Tristan has been on the tour for 5 years having played in 74 tournaments and this will be his first PSA Final.

Mohamed ElSherbini beat local South African Rodney Durbach 3-1 in 54 min to setup his 3rd straight PSA final in 3 weeks, already with 2 South African titles under his belt.

Mohamed has been on the tour for 7 years but hasn’t played enough tournaments to move steadily up the rankings. Consistency shown in 2017 will ensure that he leaps up the rankings.

Crowds will be sure to flock to court 1 at UCT with South Africans vs the Egyptians in the finals which promises to be an entertaining evening of high level squash.

Together with the finals of all the masters: men 35-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-75 and women’s 35-49 and the 3 other open sections.

Locals advance in Cape Town quarters

Match of the evening was South African qualifier Gary Wheadon upsetting the no 1 seed Auguste Dussourd in 78 min of entertaining squash.

After going 2-1 down and losing the third game 1-11 the silence in the crowds showed that locals thought the 36 year old South African was down and out. Gary however had plenty more in the tank and rallied to a 11-9 win in the 4th and continued this pace winning the 5th and claiming his first semi-final spot at this tournament.

Two other South Africans will join him in the Semi Finals with Tristan Eysele (no 3 seed) and 45 year old South African qualifier Rodney Durbach (only men's player to win two Keith Grainger Memorial UCT Open Titles) also making their way into the semis.

Representing Egypt and all other internationals is Mohamed ElSherbini who worked his way into his 3rd straight semi final PSA tournament from the qualifiers with a hard fought 3-1 win over the no 2 seed Mark Fuller. It was 81 minutes of entertaining squash, both players very vocal on court ‘discussing’ the match with the officials to the amusement of the crowd together with long rallies ensured a riveting spectacle.

In the women’s draw no 1 seed Nikki Todd from Canada continued her impressive run not dropping a game yet beating South African Cheyna Tucker in 20 min.

Menna Hamed had a hard fought 3-1 win over Latvian no 1 Ineta Mackevica and local South African Alexandra Fuller eased past South African qualifier Juanette Le Roux in 15min.

The match of the evening for the women was between Elise Romba and Menna Nasser. Elise was 2-0 up and it looked like last night;s hard fought 5 set win over the no 2 seed had taken its toll on Menna but the Egyptian showed her class by winning the next 3 games and match in 54 min.
Down to the quarters in Cape Town

After three days of build up the opening night of the main draw has finally begun and crowds were treated to another evening of upsets with seeds tumbling in both the men and women’s draws.

Match of the evening in the women’s section was Egyptian Menna Nasser beating the no 2 seed South African Milnay Louw, 11-9 in the 5th game.

Menna was two games up and Milnay had to dig deep to claw her way back into the game, with plenty of local crowd support she was urged on and nearly achieved a remarkable comeback but Menna kept the pressure on to win the match.

In the men’s draw South African qualifier Gary Wheadon beat the no 7 seed JP Brits and fellow qualifier Rodney Durbach beat the no 4 seed Lyell Fuller who retired ill.

Egyptian qualifier Mohamed ElSherbini continued his great run in South Africa when he beat the no 8 seed Enzo Corigliano.
