Serme comeback retains title in Cleveland

In a repeat of the 2016 final, top seed Camille Serme came from two games down to deny Alison Waters and retain the title.

Game 1:
The 1st point is very long, Waters wins it. The second point is also very long. Waters also wins it. Everybody changes dinner reservations at this point, looks like a 5 setter. The match continued as a back-hand battle, both players very disciplined, playing deep and tight.

Waters turns it on and attacks. It works. 5-1, Waters. 7-2. Sereme clawed back into the match. Waters slams the tin, 10-9. Waters slams the left fore-hand nick, 10-10. Waters slams the back-hand nick 11-10. Games ends 12-10, Waters.

Game 2:
Whole new arsenal of shots by Waters. 3-1, 4-4. Great points by Serme to tie it at 4-4, 6-6. Finally, Waters pulls ahead with great shots and 9-6. 9-10. Winner by Waters gives her the game 11-9, Waters.

Game 3:
Stroke Serme. 1-0. Serme gets early success, 3-0. Stays ahead 5-1. Sereme attacking short on the back-hand, it works, 6-2. Final score 11-7, Serme.

Game 4:
Devastating lobs by Serme. Takes an early 3-1 lead. Nice points by Waters puts her ahead 4-3. No panic by Serme, wins 5 straight points and goes 8-4 up. Game closes out 11-8, Serme.

Game 5:
Classic game of attrition. Great squash, not much to work with for both players, tough, tight and deep shots. 2-2.

Serme repels the englishmans onslaught with well-timed lobs to slow Waters down. The change of pace off-sets a faster paced Waters.

Serme takes the 5th 11-7.

CAMILLE SERME 3-0 SARAH-JANE PERRY

Game 1: Serme wins the duel for the back court. Both players play long points, cautious and deep into the back. Serme and Perry waiting for the other to make an aggressive move. Not much attacking, nervy start from both players. 8-8, 10-10. Perry drills the ball into the nick deep on the back hand, 11-10. Perry drills the ball deep into the tin, 11-11. The error by Perry at 11-10 lets Serme back into the game and cost Perry the 1st game. 13-11, Serme.

Game 2: Perry picks where she left off in the 1st. Another shot into the tin by Perry. Serme smells blood, more attacking now and measured. 5-0, Serme. Serme plucks another volley out of the air and buries it in the nick, 7-3, Serme. Perry down but by no means out, she claws back to 4-7. Errors galore for Serme at this stage.

The Frenchman regroups and unloads a salvo of attacking shots, unsettling the Englishman and breaking down Perry’s defense. Great battle, the Frenchman prevails. 11-9.

Game 3: Serme fires her way to a quick 3-0 lead. Perry holds of the French onslaught, defends brilliantly and reels in the marauding Serme 7-9 to Serme. Game ends close, 12-10, Serme.

Serme: “I have been watching Sarah a lot, nothing was easy. Had to keep running everywhere.”

ALISON WATERS 3-0 EMILY WHITLOCK

Game 1: Emily can’t make Waters uncomfortable, 6-0. Emily gutsy and feisty, ambles her way to 8-6. The hole Whitlock dug is too deep. 11-6, Waters.

Game 2: Whitlock energized and keeps it close, 4-4. Waters turns up the pace, 8-4. Whitlock hangs on and slogs her way back to 8-8. Experience overcomes youth, Waters closes the game 11-8.

15/Feb, Qualifying Finals
Jermaine Xaba reports,
photos by Andrea Dawson and Catalina Pelaez

NADINE SHAHIN 3/0 TAMIKA SAXBY
1st
Nervous start from both players. Mirroring each other’s strategy with defensive play early on with deep, non/threatening shots. Back and forth – tied at 7/7 in the 1st. The Egyptian has more luck finding winners at the end and closes out the game 11/8.
2nd
Saxby playing lots of angles from most parts of the court, wrong foots the Egyptian but unable to convert her opportunities into points. Nadine’s powerful ground strokes unsettle Saxby and again the Egyptian takes a narrow 11/8 win.
3rd
Blistering pace at the beginning both players hitting hard. Nadine proves to be the harder hitter of the two players and forces the pace where Saxby concedes too many errors. Again, another 11/8 win for Nadine.

HANIA EL HAMMAMY 3/0 MAYAR HANY
1st
Hania draws 1st blood in what was a grueling 1st game characterized by long rallies and very few errors. Classic game of attrition. The 17/year/old pulls it off with a 11/7 win.
2nd
The pace and physicality of the 1st game heavily taxed Mayar. Hania cruises to an early 10/2 lead shutting out her fellow country man to a 4/point game. 11/4 Hania.
3rd
Third game closely resembles the 1st early on. Long points and no errors. Tied at 5/5, Hania holds, flicks and kills everything thing she swipes at. It works, 11/5, Hania.

HOLLIE NAUGHTON 3/0 RACHAEL CHADWICK
1st
Error laden game for Chadwick, can’t find a rhythm. Naughton does a great job containing Chadwick to the back of the court with steady pace and debilitating length. 11/7, Naughton.
2nd
3/1 lead for Chadwick vanishes quickly with Naughton again making very few errors and disrupting Chadwick with pace and precision. Game ends 11/5, Naughton.
3rd
A frustrated Chadwick is unable to find her length. The Canadian capitalizes on the loose balls with brute accuracy in the back court taking a quick 6/2 lead. Chadwick serves out at 10/3 to hand Canadian the victory.

FIONA MOVERLEY 3/0 SARAH CARDWELL
1st
Very evenly contested 1st game. Power and reach ultimately gave Moverley the game after the game had been tied at 10/10. Moverley closes out the game 12/10.
2nd
Hotly contested game. Both athletes using their core strengths to stay in the game. Moverley’s reach gets her around the court well. Cardwell’s speed and agility countered Moverley’s reach and strength for another close 11/8 finish to the English woman.
3rd
Fierce start to the 3rd game. Both players picking up seeming impossible returns. Fiona took an early 4/0 lead. Clinical squash from the English woman closes the game out 11/4.

Bob Botti and Jermaine Xaba report, photos by Andrea Dawson

HOLLIE NAUGHTON 3/0 MARIJA SHPAKOVA
The higher ranked Canadian Naughton closed out an evenly contested match with superior length, consistency and fewer errors. Naughton forced Shpakova to play from very deep which left the Swiss very exposed up front for most of the match.

SARAH CARDWELL 3/0 COLETTE SULTANA
Lower ranked Sultana gave a respectable exchange against Cardwell the Australian who closed out the 1st game in a 12/10 nail biter. Sultana gave all she had in the 2nd and 3rd games but succumbed to defeat in 3 straight games.

MAYAR HANY  3/1 CATALINA PELAEZ
Hany with impeccable disciple played the Colombian into deep areas of the court where Catalina’s preferred short game resulted in tremendous errors when it really counted later in the 1st game.11/4 to the Egyptian.
Catalina took the 2nd game closing Hany out with immaculate drop shots from all over the court. Close one. 11/ 8 to the Colombian. ~

3rd and 4th game were both great displays of good length and discipline. Hany’s deep game rendered Catalina’s drop ineffective from the back court where the Colombian made way too many errors, allowing the Egyptian to win in 4.

RACHAEL CHADWICK 3/0 SADIA GUL
Chadwick pulls away late. Wins 11/7 in the 1st game. Chadwick settled early and pulled away early, doomed Gul to a 11/2 loss in the second. Too many errors from the Pakistani. Game 3 was a continuation of errors from the Pakistani. Chadwick took a comfy 11/5 game win to close out the match 3/0.

HANIA EL HAMMAMY 3/0 TINNE GILIS
Exceptionally close first game, both players being very cautious. Very little attacking play from both players. The Egyptian narrowly won the game 11/8. 2nd and 3rd games quickly went to the Egyptian who threw caution to the wind and found winners came every time she swung her racquet. Hammamy closed out the match in 3.

FIONA MOVERLEY 3/1 ROWAN ELARABY
Entertaining 1st game. Moverley out early and the Egyptian responds too late. Good shots alternating with a multitude of errors from Elaraby gave Moverley a 16/14 win.

Elaraby leads early in the 2nd, but stalls. Moverley reels her in and pulls away. 11/5. No giving up for the Egyptian in the 3rd. Elaraby picked up the tempo forcing errors from Moverley. The Egyptian took the lead early and kept it 12/10 to Elaraby.

An aggressive Moverley makes too many errors early in the 4th, let’s Elaraby back in. Sublimely contentious battle to the end. Once again great squash from both players, Moverley wins out 12/10.

TAMIKA SAXBY 3/0 SACHIKA INGALE
Calm, cool and collected is the only way to describe Saxby in this match closing out Sachika in 3 straight games. 1st game was 5/11, a nervous Sachika tried too much early on and racked up an impressive error count.
More composed in the second Sachika kept it close all the way to a 10/12 game where Saxby just won.

The 3rd game was an improved version of the 1st game where Saxby made 1 error to win the game 11/1.
