Delierre almost upsets top seed

Shawn DeLierre of Brossard, Que., took top-seed Julian Illingworth to the limit on Friday night but eventually lost the semifinal match in five games at the $10,000 White Oaks Cup men’s professional squash tournament.

The competition is the third stop on the Canadian Circuit and also a stop on the men’s Pro Tour.

Illingworth, the U.S., national champion, overcame a 0-2 deficit to win the match 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-6 in 94 minutes, the longest encounter of the tournament so far. It was the second time this season, DeLierre had reached a Pro Tour semifinal. He was also in the final four at nationals in May.

Meanwhile Andrew McDougall of Calgary was in his first career semifinal on the Pro Tour and lost to second-seed Mark Krajcsak of Hungary 11-2, 11-5, 11-3.

Three Canadians in White Oaks semis

Shawn DeLierre of Brossard, Que., and Andrew McDougall of Calgary, the seventh and eighth seeds, are into the final four at the $10,000 White Oaks Cup men’s professional squash tournament.

The competition is the third stop on the Canadian Circuit and also a stop on the men’s pro tour.

It’s the second time this season that DeLierre is in the semis on the pro tour while this is the furthest McDougall has ever gone on the circuit.

In the other quarterfinals, top seed and American national champion Julian Illingworth defeated Robin Clarke of Toronto 11-6, 11-4, 11-7 while number-two Mark Krajcsak of Hungary eliminated David Phillips of Pointe-Claire, Que., 11-3, 11-1, 11-9.

Five Canadians advance to quarters

The tournament is the third stop on the Canadian Circuit and also a stop on the men’s pro tour.

West had originally not advanced through qualifying but received a ticket to the main draw after Laurence Delasaux of England withdrew due to a throat infection. West faced qualifier Dane Sharp of Ajax, Ont., in what turned out one of the most exciting matches of the night winning 11-7, 7-11, 11-6, 5-11, 12-10 in a 74 minute marathon.

West was among five Canadians to advance to the final eight.
