Welsh National Squash Championships 2012
06-08 Jan, Cardiff |
SAFFERY SAVOURS TITLE
No.4,
PETE PUSHES TO THIRD IN A ROW
The
Welsh National Championships came to an end on Sunday
evening in front of a packed crowd at the Sport Wales
National Centre in Cardiff, over 200 people squeezed in
to glass back seating area and the squash on display did not
disappoint.
With all other grades complete, from the 'E' grade all the
way to the 'B' grade we were down to the main events, first
up was the ladies final between Welsh number 1 and World
number 60 Tesni Evans and Welsh number 2 and World
number 78 Deon Saffery.
Both players playing some fast and furious squash, Deon was
able to squeeze out the first two games from 7-7 to take
them both 11-7.
Tesni
came back out in the third full of energy and cracked in
some superb nicks and hard hit winners, she was fired up and
took the next two games to level at 2-2.
In the fifth it was neck and neck all the way and at 8/7 up
Tesni slipped at the front but recovered to force a stroke
against Deon and it was 9/7, after a 3 minute injury break
the match continued with Deon pushing Tensi around the court
as much as she could.
Soon it was 9-9 and then a great winner from Deon brought up
10/9 match ball, she took it first time and won the match
3-2, a great match watched by 200 outside the courts but
another 200+ online LIVE.
The
next match on was that of the men's Final between the
current Welsh number 1 and two times Welsh National Champion
Peter Creed and the in form Scott Fitzgerald.
Peter started the match at a blistering pace with a mix of
winners at the front and some scary tight length pushing
Scott to every corner of the court, Scott himself who hits a
super clean ball every time was making Pete work with his
fantastic touch sending the ball to the front with ease.
Peter
raced to a 2- 0 lead in games but Scott wasn't done there,
the third game went the way of Fitzgerald and he was back in
the match.
The final game of the match was full of quality once again
from both players who had already been on court for over 40
minutes, Pete winning the fourth 11/6 and winning National
Championships number 3, that's 3 on the bounce - we don't
think that's been done before. after the match Peter said
"Welsh National Champion x 3. Little stoked!!"
Excellent effort from everyone all weekend, all 90+ entrants
and all the staff at Squash Wales. The LIVE streaming was a
massive success again with well over 1200 viewers all
weekend and over 2,500 hits on the event website also.

WELSH
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012 – AND IT’S LIVE!
The Welsh National Championships 2012 will be held at the
Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff on January 6th – 8th.
Over 90 players will be heading to Cardiff from all over
Wales, some hoping for glory, some hoping to get back into
the swing of things after the festive break.
The main men’s event last year was won by Peter Creed
for the second year in succession. If Caerphilly born Creed
wins it again in 2012 it will be a record third consecutive
title and consolidate his position as the Welsh no.1. Peter
who now plays for the South Wales Premier League team
Rhiwbina has had an excellent season so far being unbeaten
in all league games, winning the South Glam Closed as well
as touring North America playing in PSA events. It will be
tough again for Creed this year with Nic Birt,
Jethro Binns, Dave Haley and Scott Fitzgerald
all out to spoil the party; some top squash will be on show.
In the women’s main event Tesni Evans won the event
for the first time as a senior last year. Tesni has won a
number of Junior National Championships and is the current
Welsh Junior Open Champion. Tesni beat fellow friend and
team mate Hannah Davies in the final last year, only
dropping one game in the entire event. The last twelve
months has been incredible for Tesni who has won a number of
European Junior Events and made semi finals and finals of
WISPA World Tour events all over the World. In this years
event Deon Saffery will look to regain her form which
saw her reach 65 in the World Rankings last year. Some more
great squash will be on display in the Women’s event.
The remaining categories are graded and open to all
standards and ages. So come on down to the Capital of Wales
and the home of Squash Wales to watch some great squash. The
event will also be streamed LIVE online for the first time
in its history.
You can watch all the action LIVE online as well as watching
some of the matches after the event; maybe you want to watch
your favorite Welsh player or watch a match back of yourself
playing. The results will also be updated regularly
throughout the weekend.
