Golan Glides Into Valencia Final
Howard Harding Reports

Top-ranked Spaniard Borja Golan delighted the partisan crowd at the inaugural Valencia Open when he brushed aside Bradley Hindle to reach the final at Club Olympia in Valencia, the third largest city in Spain.

The favourite from Santiago de Compostela had reached the semi-finals without dropping a game - and continued his confident run by dismissing unseeded Hindle, from Malta, 11-2, 11-4, 11-1 in just 25 minutes.

"Today I was more relaxed than yesterday and I felt pretty comfortable with my moments and shots," explained Golan, the former world No10 who is the highest-ranked Spaniard of all-time. "Bradley is a great player but maybe he felt the five games from yesterday.

"I want to thank all the Valencian supporters and the organisation to make possible one of the best tournaments that I ever played," added the 28-year-old, now in the 32nd PSA final of his career, but his first for a year.

Golan will line up against second seed Omar Abdel Aziz in the final. The Egyptian ended Max Lee's brave run, beating the world No58 from Hong Kong 11-7, 11-4, 11-6.

Lee made his breakthrough in the first round where he ousted third seed Chris Simpson. "It's a nice tournament," said the 23-year-old. "I am very happy to win two tough matches - but not very happy for today. I made many errors!"

Aziz, the 28-year-old world No42 from Cairo, will be playing the 11th PSA final of his career, and his third this year.

It has been a pleasure to play this PSA Valencia in my town with my people.

When I knew I had to play against Borja it was a bit confuse for me, because he is a good friend and a competition mate of me from we were under 10, and I knew how difficult is play against the best squash player in the Spanish history.

As for the tournament management. I think we are doing a good work helping players to feel comfortable here and play his best squash.

Therefore I think they are playing a high level since first day. We have many supporters every day. I am happy because all of that!! I hope the tournament finish in the best way possible.

Bradley Battles To Valencia Semis....
Howard Harding Reports

Unseeded Bradley Hindle survived the longest match in the quarter-finals of the inaugural Valencia Open to claim an unexpected place in the last four of the PSA World Tour Challenger 15 squash event at Maestro Serrano in Valencia, Spain.

The 30-year-old from Malta fought back from 2/1 down to overcome Mark Krajcsak, the fourth seed from Hungary ranked 19 places higher, 11-7, 6-11, 7-11, 11-5, 13-11 in 85 minutes.

Hindle's next opponent took less than half the time to earn his place in the semi-finals. Borja Golan, the top seed leading home hopes in Valencia, despatched English qualifier Olivier Pett 11-7, 11-8, 11-2 in 40 minutes.

Max Lee continued his impressive run in his first appearance in a Tour event in Spain. After ousting third seed Chris Simpson in the opening round, the unseeded 23-year-old from Hong Kong took five games to get the better of New Zealander Campbell Grayson, winning 5-11, 13-11, 11-9, 2-11, 12-10 in 65 minutes.

Lee now lines up against second seed Omar Abdel Aziz, the world No42 who survived a close second game to defeat unseeded Frenchman Grégoire Marche 11-4, 12-10, 11-7.

5-Oct-2011 - First round
MAX OUTS CHRIS....
Howard Harding Reports

Max Lee
of Hong Kong earned an unexpected place in the quarter-finals of the inaugural Valencia Open when he ousted third seed Chris Simpson in the opening round of the PSA World Tour Challenger 15 squash event at Maestro Serrano in Valencia, Spain.

In his second successive upset over the higher-ranked Englishman this year, Lee recovered from a game down to beat Simpson 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-5.

The unseeded 23-year-old, ranked 58 in the world, will now face Campbell Grayson after the New Zealander defeated South African qualifier Shaun le Roux 4-11, 11-2, 11-6, 11-1.

Top-ranked Spaniard Borja Golan eased his way into the last eight after overcoming compatriot Alejandro Garbi Caro 11-6, 11-5, 11-4. The top seed from Santiago de Compostela will face qualifier Olivier Pett for a place in the semi-finals.

Englishman Pett, ranked 87 in the world, scored a notable upset when he beat Frenchman Yann Perrin, the world No68 from Aix-en-Provence, 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 11-3.

France's Grégoire Marche survived the longest match of the day, overcoming Dane Kristian Frost Olesen 2-11, 11-7, 11-2, 7-11, 11-1 in 80 minutes.

The 21-year-old from Aix-en-Provence will now take on second seed Omar Abdel Aziz. The Egyptian also took more than an hour to see off his first round opponent Davide Bianchetti, beating the former world No24 from Italy 11-9, 11-8, 11-13, 12-10 in 70 minutes.

I think I played a good tournament.

Mark is playing similar to me. We both attacking early and getting a lo of balls. Unfortunately did Mark played tighter than me today.

Also, mentally was Mark a bit fresher and stronger. After 1-1 I got down 5:0 too early and in the fourth again. I wasn´t really tired, but I did the mistakes at the wrong moment.

Finally, I would say that I played some good shots and I can learn a lot from the game!! ;)

Happy with  the way I played, I made some early mistakes but he returned the favour.

My squash is getting better and enjoying it.
Salut Fram,

Final Draw

Tough game, Tough conditions!

It was a very hard game mentally, it was who could hang in there with the ball moving so much and who could control the middle... I felt I did that very well in the first and than was patchy after that.

All I could do was hang in there and chase everything down as I was struggling but really made things tough at in the 4th and at the end of the 5th and luckily scrapped through.

Really enjoyed it thought Amir plays a fair game which makes it enjoyable and just squash. glad to get through it.

Margaux Pitarch reports on the qualifs

After the different affairs of yesterday: withdraws, draws redone, injuries, long and short games, surprises… Today the event went quieter. Le Roux beat Haykocks in fou games though he lost first.

Then, Romiglio led the match against Roude and in the 90 min of the second match Juan Pablo retired because injury.

Pett needed an hour and five games to beat Swelim. The English began wining but Swelim got the next two and Pett had to do his best on the fourth and fifth.

The longest and tough match was the last one, between Sharpes and Kandra. Sharpes won first an third games but Kandra the last two with the same result 11-9.

I am very happy being in Valencia. I have being in Spain since last Monday and enjoying it. Loving the weather! I am playing well at the moment and looking forward to the main draw tomorrow.

I am a bit angry because I was playing well but in the second I felt injured, couldn´t play my 100% and I had to give up.

Now, I hope get better quickly and I wish Leandro the best in this tournament.

3-Oct-2011 - Qualifications first round :

Playing a PSA in my club and in my city has been an honour. Was very impressive look people supporting me! I am very happy with my game, I done my best, but Jaymie is a great player. I hope people enjoyed as much as me.

That was a good match, wasn´t it? I gave all I had, and if you do that you have to be happy.

I was under pressure during all the match. Even that, I was hitting the ball well. He is a very clean and strong player, I am sure he is going to be on the top again soon.

I would like to thank Alex the opportunity he gave me here. It was an amazing crow supporting during all the match.

So, thanks and I´ll be back.

I am very happy with the result but specially for how I am playing. After playing a few tournaments recently I feel so well and confident inside court.

We played four times and is the first time I beat him. I want to thank the organization for this great event and Alex because him gave me de opportunity to play.

Firstly, to appreciate Alex (Garbí) for this opportunity. And secondly, I am a bit sad because I didn´t play my best squash, and I was out in the important moments of the match.

Congratulations Juan Pablo for the match.

See you next year.
