Egdbaston break Pontefract run,
Colets claim hat-trick ...
Paul Houghton reports
Edgbaston Priory were crowned new National Women's Club
Champions, breaking Pontefract's impressive run, as Colets
claimed yet another Men's National Title today at
Nottingham.
Leonie Holt and her team from Edgbaston have finally
wrestled the Championship from Pontefract. Julianne Courtice
started with a comfortable 3-0 win over Grace Smith, Lottie
Eriksen then made it 2-0 to Edgbaston with a 3-0 against
Katie Smith. The pressure fell onto Kirsty McPhee who faced
Leonie Holt, this was a battle and a very hard fought match,
Holt seemed to have that little bit extra in the tank as the
game went into the 5th. Holt taking it and winning the
Women's National Club Championships for Edgbaston Priory
before Pontefract's big hitters had a chance to do any
damage.
After already collecting the Mens Over 35 and Over 45 Titles
this weekend, the Colets boys from Surrey didn't want to
stop. Led by Nick Matthew they were simply too strong for
the young Pontefract side. Drew faced Cordell, and although
Cordell came close to taking a couple of the games it turned
out to be a 3-0 victory for Drew, as Ewins made it 2-0 for
Colets with a 3-0 against Sam Wileman. Nick Matthew was
given the opportunity to wrap things up for Colets and you
couldn't have asked for a stronger player to rely on. The
World Number 6 proving too strong for Pontefract's Indian
Saurav Ghosal, winning 3-0 and the tie for Colets.

Day ONE
Chris Nutley reports
Well the season is almost up and as usual at this time of
the year we headed down to the Park in Nottingham for the
National Club Championship finals - just about the last
action before the summer break. Traditionally this weekend
has attracted the sun but no luck this year as we were
greeted with some torrential rain early! But not to be
deterred the squash got under way on time.
Ponte on course for double ?
In the men’s and women’s events it was semi-final day –
reigning champions Colets renewing their rival with
Bishop’s Stortford and Duffield providing new
opposition for Pontefract.
In the women’s Pontefract took on home club
Nottingham while Edgbaston Priory tackled midland
rivals Duffield.
Pontefract look capable of achieving a notable double this
year and took both their semi finals with the minimum of
fuss. Their men have a real Indian influence with both
Ghosal and Pal Sindu heading the line up which is backed up
home grown players Cordell, Earles and Wileman.
It was a comfortable 4-1 win for Ponte with Duffield’s sole
point coming from veteran Jason Foster. Foster, an
international masters competitor faced England under 17
player James Earles in the match of session one which went
all the way. Earles twice fought back to level the game at
2-2 and looked to be favourite to go on and take the match.
However Foster dug deep and body willing hung in and took
the fifth to 10-8 before having to come off with a blood
injury! Luckily this was a brief interruption and he
returned to take the next point and a notable victory.
Pontefract’s women, who as well as last year’s winners are
the current European Club Champions were just as impressive
and swept aside Nottingham 4-1 with Vanessa Atkinson, Lauren
Siddall, Kirsty McPhee and Katie Smith all winning in three.
New Eltham take Women's O35
The only main draw final today was the Women’s Over 35:
New Eltham Wanderers v Nottingham. It didn’t get off to
a great start for New Eltham with Karen Hume getting out of
her car after a four hour drive and heading straight onto
court to face Nottingham’s Jane Berry. Still in driving
mode, Hume found herself two down and facing a miserable
trip back down the M1 within minutes. However she regrouped
and fought back to square things at 2-2. The fifth was tight
but Hume showed true character to take it to a tie breaker
and eventually seal it 12-10.
Jane Fletcher then proceeded to level the match with a good
victory over Mandy Akin leaving it to candy Wilton to secure
another Over 35 crown for the wanderers with a 3-0 win over
Sue Pynegar – a good day for the Kent girls after all!

Colets cruise into men's final
Session two saw 2008 champions Colets defeat a Bishop’s
Stortford team that was depleted through injury. The loss of
at least four players took its toll on Stortford losing
their three bottom strings in quick succession so the match
was over before either the No1s or 2s began. Nick Matthew
kept it going according to plan with a 3-1 win over Daryl
Selby and Peter Marshall wrapped things up with a 3-0 over
Neil Hitchens.
Priory set sights on Europe
Edgbaston Priory have assembled a very strong women’s outfit
that looks to have quality throughout. The order is
spearheaded by Victoria Lust and Emma Chorley with Leonie
Holt, Lotte Erikson and Julianne Courtice, current British
Under 17 Champion, completing the team.
Their opponents, Duffield have quality themselves, with
Laura Hill, who retained her National Racketball title last
weekend (as did Bishop Stortford’s Daryl Selby) and top
junior Millie Tomlinson at one and teo respectively. However
priory quickly wrapped it up by taking the first three
matches on court. Although technically a dead rubber the
number one strings was a real tussle: Laura Hill v Victoria
Lust –Lust took a 2-0 lead but only just (11/9 13/11) and
the third was just as tighter before Hill finally got off
the mark with a 12/10er to start her fight back. From then
on it was experience over youth as Laura controlled matters
and take the last two games comfortably to keep Victoria in
her place – a consolation point for Duffield.
Both the men’s and women’s finals now look interesting with
Pontefract and Colets in the men’s and Pontefract and
Edgbaston Priory set to fight it out for the ladies crown.
Edgbaston will already be looking at a possible trip to the
European Club Championships in September as Pontefract are
already assure of a spot as current European Champions.
Tomorrow promises much!
