Day Three:
TOP MEN CRUISE INTO SEMIS

Ryan Abraham reports

Each of the four men's seeds cruised through their quarterfinal matches without too much effort and will be setting up some interesting semi final match-ups.
Ramasra easily disposed of the younger Patrick brother in clinical fashion, while Wilson ousted the other brother, Mandela. Both Patrick brothers had earned themselves quarter-final spots by upsetting the ranks, but they were humbled by the top guns yesterday in Men's Quarter-Final action.

The other two quarter-final matches saw #2 Ryan Abraham win in 3 straight games against Brandon DeMontrichard, and former Guyanese player, Julian Chin, ousted one of T & T's top juniors, Chayse McQuan in similar fashion.

Mens 40+ matches also went according to the books as each of the top 4 seeds have advanced to the semi-finals.
The exciting matches all took place in the Mens Open Plate as 3 of the 4 matches went to 5.

Ladies quarter-final action begins today with the top 4 seeds taking the court for the first time.

Day Two:
PATRICK BROTHERS JOIN THE BIG GUNS
Ryan Abraham reports

It was a great night for upsets as 3 of the qualifiers from Tuesday night appeared to have fate on their side when they randomly picked their main draw opponents.

Two of these lucky people were none other than the young and upcoming Patrick brothers. Nku Patrick who was the 2008 Caribbean U13 Champion had avoided being paired up with any of the top 4 but chose the #5 seed, Peter Pirtheesingh when he made his pick from the cup. 13-year-old Patrick had already played Pirtheesingh earlier this year in the T & T Open, but lost that match 3-2. He was ready for revenge.

However, Pirtheesingh had different plans and the former National player used his experience to play slow, steady squash and frustrate the junior player. He won a first close game 11-9, and then earned a 10-3 lead in the second before having to stop a Patrick comeback and win the second game 11-8. Patrick seemed like he was lost and ready to succumb to emotions, but his coach, Ryan Abraham, along with his father, Raymond, pulled him aside to settle him down.

Whatever was said seemed to be working as Patrick returned on court for the 3rd game rejuvenated. He quickly raced to 8-3 up and then 10-7 with 3 game balls. But Pirtheesingh once again found his way back with steady drives and avoiding unforced errors to earn match ball at 11-10. Patrick's resolve was still strong though and he fought off match ball to take the 3rd game 13/11.

The match had only now begun! The 13-year-old was determined to exact his revenge tonight and in the 4th game led 10-6 before winning 11-9. In the 5th game, he found himself in a similar position to the 3rd where he cruised to a 8-2 lead, but Pirtheesingh had more fight left.

Some long rallies ensued and Pirtheesingh fought back to 6-8 before Patrick halted him in his tracks, and with some determination and fist-pumping the National U-15 champ took the 5th and final game 11-8 to earn himself a place in the QuarterFinals.

Next on the same court, Nku's older brother, Mandela would have a hard act to follow. Mandela is the 2009 Caribbean U-15 champ and National U-17 champion and was set to face-off against Kevin Ross, former U-19 #2 and last year's reserve for the T & T Caribbean Champions.

However, the older Patrick brother was more than ready for the challenge, and Ross, who had not played much squash in his first year at university in Canada didn't seem to remember what to do on court. Patrick played with composure and maturity to cruise to a 3-0 victory taking out the out-of-form Ross, 11/8, 11/3, 11/8 to join his brother in the quarter finals.

Nku will now face top seed Colin Ramasra while Mandela plays T & T's #1 junior, Kale Wilson.

Brandon DeMontrichard was the 3rd upset for the night when he took out #7 seed Luc Davis in 4 games. It was an affair of long rallies, but De Montrichard had just come out of a rough patch of squash in his last tournament a week ago, and appeared to have bounced right back into the form he had for the T & T Open.

De Montrichard earns himself a quarterfinal bout against #2 seed Ryan Abraham.

Mens 40+ Seeds Stay On Course

There were no upsets in the Mens 40+ category as all top 8 seeds have advanced to the quarter-finals. However, from here on out there could be some interesting and tricky match-ups.

Two potentially grueling contests may be seen in the Jackson vs Smart and Hart vs Mowser matches later today. Jackson and Hart are both former 40+ champions but could be pushed by their opponents today.

Top seed Holley is expected to have a relatively comfortable match against fellow Petrotrin club member, Raymond Patrick (father of Mandela and Nku), while first-time 40+ entrant and #2 seed, Mark Laughlin is also expected to get past Brian Philips to advance to the semis.

But as we all know with this sport, anything can happen!
