The 17th annual St Lucia Squash
Open begins Monday with a large male contingent this year
with some familiar faces and some new ones as the
Association continues its mandate to grow sports tourism on
the island.
This year Richard Chin, Guyanese based in the USA
will be participating for the first time in our Open. He is
seeded #1 followed by our own Charlie Sonson in the
#2 position. Also included in the draw are three men from St
Vincent including James Bentick, a previous OECS
champ and rival of Sonson as well as players from Trinidad,
Barbados and England. Vincentian Kevin Bailey comes
to St Lucia from the Barbados Open where he caused not one
but two upsets in the Barbados camp. He defeated top seeds
Gavin Cumberbatch and Mark Sealy both of Barbados. Kevin
placed third in 2009 Subaru St Lucia Squash Open
The ladies draw this year has continued to suffer with
numbers. It is again small with the #1 seed being Amber
Glasgow of St Vincent. The organizers lament the reasons
for poor participation from the caribbean continues to be
the cost of travel between the islands and with sponsorship
down, the prize money has also had to be decreased.
This year the Association will miss two regular faces one on
court and one off. Karen Meakins, the reigning champion who
has participated for the last nine years, is unable to
attend. Our off court regular attendee ‘Photobias’ a good
media friend of the association will be missed this year as
he never missed covering a squash tournament for the local
TV station HTS.
The Association this year has struggled to confirm the
normal level of sponsorship but are extremely grateful to
the Hotels who have again agreed to support us Cap Maison,
Bay Gardens Inn, Rex St Lucian Resort and the
Village Inn & spa. Other valuable sponsorship has come
from Subaru our previous title sponsor, the Bank
of Nova Scotia and Dominos Pizza.
Play begins Monday evening at 5.00 pm at the St Lucia Yacht
Club and admission is free. The competition will begin with
round robin matches till Wednesday and then go on to a knock
out tournament.

Squash on the Beach ...

beach in St Lucia so we are that perfect mix of holiday and
squash as our matches do not start till early evening so
players have the day to site see, go the beach and shop and
we finish early enough for them to take in st lucia’s night
life and this week will include many pre carnival events as
Carnival takes place mid July.
