Spanish Team Championships 2010
04-06 June, Girona

The Spanish National Team Championships uses a different format than most of the European leagues, with 32 teams descending on Gorona for a hectic weekend of squash ...

Castellana take women's title

After the 3rd and 4th place playoff, which Can Melich won 2-1, it was the women's final between Peri Sport and Castellana.

The first match was between Stela Carbonell for Peri Sport and Luz Etchechoury. Stela took the first but the Argentine fought back to take the next three games.

Margaux Moros (on her birthday) levelled the match level with a 3-0 win against Alicia Alvarez, so the number twos had to decide the title.

Chantal Moros took the lead for Peri Sport, but the second and third games were won by Belen Etchechoury on the tie break. The fourth game was in suspense till the end, but Belen got the match to give the title to Castellana.

In the men's final Squash Santigo beat Malibu.

Margaux, Chantel & Stela report (from their bungalow!)

No surprises for the women's final, both top seeded will fight tomorrow for the Spanish title.

Peri Esport team won their semifinal against their neighbouring club, Club Squash Valencia. The other semifinal was played between Castellana Squash Club and the currently champions, Can Melich, with Castellana winning.

The women's final at at 11:30 on Sunday will be a bit of a family affair: Stela Carbonel will play Luz Etchechoury, Margaux Pitarch vs Alicia Alvarez and Chantal Pitarch vs Belén Etchechoury.

The good weather, the venue and the great environment are making a succesful tournament.

While we are writing this report the men are playing their semis: Malibú vs Fuengirola and Squash Santiago vs Can Mélich.

Santiago aim for repeat title in Girona
Carlos Cornes reports

The tournament will take place in Girona , a small city right next to Barcelona from the 4th till the 6th of June, and 32 teams will participate in the competition.

The squash club Santiago wants to take its second title in a row, after winning last year at home, and this year they are one of the favourites to take the title.

The squash Santiago team will be represented by former world number 10 Borja Golan, the European junior champion, Lucas Serme, the last semi-finalist of the Europeans masters and team manager Jesus Souto, the former Spanish junior champion Carlos Cornes and the Egyptian Amir el Samahy.

The goal of the tournament is to bring back home the trophy, it's gonna be tough specially because we play away, and last year was easier with the home crowd, we have a good team and we are going to try oor best for the title.

(TEAM CAPTAIN)

I really want to play this tournament and the 2 coming next in France, I feel so much better than a month ago, my feelings are so different, my first goal is to bring the title for my club, since I was 10 years old.

(8 time Spanish champion and former world no 10)

Well, I've been called a week or so before the tournament, and it's been quite a surprise for me actually! But I'm really happy to be able to play here in Girona, among so many good players. It's a great experience.

I don't know who I'm going to play yet, but I'm feeling fit and my squash has been alright lately so I'm going to give it all here in "my" team's honour!"

(European junior champion)

I never won this title, this will be one of my lasts opportunities, and we will go out there and try our bests.

Its always different when you play for your club, specially for me as it’s the family club and we really want the second in a row! We've got a great team starting from the first and finishing on the 5th player. We will try hard to win.

(former Spanish junior champion)

10 for the Women

The women's Spanish Team Championship also is celebrated in the same place and at the same time.

The top seeds are the girls of the Peri Esport (Castellón) Margaux and Chantal Moros Pitarch and Stela Carbonell. The team seeded two is Castellana, from Madrid, with twins Alicia and Soraya Álvarez and Wispa's, Luz and Belén Echechoury.

The other teams to take part are: Can Melich (Patricia Piñol, Marta Ripoll and Nuria Salvia). Malibú Esportiu (Ines Callahan, Anna Bernabeu, Marina Pich and Josefina Antunell). Esportiu Rocafort (Anna Ventura, Laura Pacheco, Regina Tanner and Celine Vallee). Club Squash Valencia (Marina de Juan, Linda Svilane and Ana Parra). Squash Principado (Maribel Toyos, Cristina Barandica, Marina Arraiza and Tatiana Fernández).

Peri Esport didn't play this tournament in recent years, and the team arrives to the last tournament of the season with a lot of hopes!
