Spanish Open 2010
14-19 Dec, Majorca, $10k
19-Dec, Final:
Rosner retains Spanish title

The final was a clash between the best players of Germany and the best of Italy.

Despite the beginning of the first game was tight, with some long rallies, from 6-6 it was all quick as
Simon Rösner took 5 points in a row. The pace wasn't very high but the German guy was controlling with his volleys and moving Davide Bianchetti to make him tired as he had a very hard match with Borja.

Second game was different, Simon started hitting the ball harder and moving quicker trying to put a lot of pressure, volleying much more than in the first game. And he got a good 5-1 lead that he kept for the rest of the game. It was 2-0 and the crowd was thinking about a quick third game, but it wasn't. It was long and very very hard.

Bianchetti played supertight length and did not allow Rösner to attack as much as he likes, and he game was leveled until 7-7. Then a tin from the Italian, and two good rallies ended in Simons side gave him three match balls.

Davide came back, building the rallies as he likes to do it. Backhand, backhand and backhand again, and then again a lovely backhand drop to win the point. 8-10. And it happened again. 9-10.

Now a tin from Rösner. 10-10. The atmosphere was tense, inside and outside the court. But Simon didn't want to lose this game, it could be really dangerous for him. It was a winner in 10-10 and he got a match ball. And after a good rally ended with a a stroke, Rösner closed the match by 3-0 and the title again.

18-Dec, Semis:
Simon on fire, Yann not there ...

The german player Simon Rosner was today on fire, playing superb-attacking squash and finishing the rallies at will. On the other side Yann Perrin had a lack of focus today as he made a too many unforced errors.

The frenchman played well during the first game, but
his concentration was going up and down. Second and third game had six and seven tins from Yann, and Rösner was not going to make any concesion, so he took the match and will quite fresh for the final as he won all his matches by 3-0.

Bianchetti breaks Spanish hearts

I really though the match between Davide Bianchetti and Borja Golan would entertain the crowd, and it really
did.

Borja took a good 4-1 and 6-3 lead in the first and he started attacking more and more, but tins came and the Italian scored some cheap points to get the advantage and came back to 6-8. Then it was a matter of concentration, and this time Davide took the game by 11-8 as Golán clipped the tin.

Second started and finished in a blink of eyes, it lasted about 5 minutes and it was 11-1 for Borja. The match was leveled to 1-1.

Then the match was stopped by an injury break, Borja was playing a forehand and hit Davide below the right eye at the end of the swing. 20 minutes later (and many thanks to my father. He's a doctor and closed the wound with some adhesive stitches) players went back on court.

But Borja seemed to have lost his concentration as he lost his length and were attacking to soon. This added to a supertight backhand length from Davide made an easy third game to the Italian as he scored seven points in a row.

It was the same in the fourth, but this time it was the Spaniard who took 7 points in a row and leveled the match 2-2 in games.

At this point both players were a bit tense, arguing with the referee quite often. Yann Perrin had a hard job refereeing this match.

It was the fifth, and Borja took the advantage by 6-3, always working Davide with his well-known backhand boast. But the, at 8-4 down, the Italian started to play better and better. It was like found a good rhythm and made rallies longer and longer playing to his backhand again and again. Length and straight drop, as he plays
normally.

Borja was working hard at that time, but he managed to be 10-7 up. He had three match balls. First one clipped the tin, 8-10. Same the second one, 9-10. Then a stroke, 10-10.

From there it was all quick, a long rally ended in a tin, and a stroke in the last point gave the match to Davide and a place in the final.

Top seeds to contest Spanish Semis

While it will be the top four seeds who battle it out in the semi-finals in Majorca, home hopes rest on Borja Golan, who continued his return to the top with a straight games win over Frenchman Joan Lezaud in the quarter-finals.

"Joan is a really talented player and you have to be very patient and careful with his attacking game.

"In the first two games I was putting pressure on him all the time and I could win quite comfortably. In the third I was up 5-0 but then I got a bit relaxed and he start to play better. Finally I was lucky to win 11-9 and pass to the next round.

"Now I will play Davide with who I had great battles in the last 8 years, so I hope it will be a good and entertaining match for the crowd."

The tournament is in memory of Fernando Vidal Salva who died in a tragic accident on August 3 2001.

Most of you did not know him, in fact it should say you did not have the luck to have known him, because to meet Fernando was quite a good luck. From him I stress that was a person committed all that he did, in his work as a social worker he was it with all those people who attended and to all those he worked with, with his family and of course with the sport in general and in particular with the squash, He practiced mostly enjoying it.

Fernando wise listen and had an enormous capacity to understand why each one is as is and does what he does.

He listened, understood and approached people to reign in its interior no rancor and in this way they projects the good of everyone and thus make live of each and of people around us something worth enjoying.

Qualifying Finals:

Alejandro Garbi v Jakob Dirnberger.
Jakob took a 5/2 lead, but the game was leveled at 6-6, then Garbi paced up the game and took the game 11-9. In the second Garbi played superb and took a 7-2 lead to close the game quiete comfortable. Started the third and the papers changed, it was Jakob who took an easy lead 6-2 and then took the game 11-5.

It seemed that the concentration of both players was up and down, as Garbi took a 6-1 lead and closed the game and match. Garbi qualified and plays Yann Perrin.

Chris Fuller vs Reiko Peter
From the begining it was written that this match was going to be long. And it was.
Both played a solid length game and the first game lasted for almost 25 minutes and it was Reiko who won it.
But that game took a lot of energy from him and the rest of the match was dominated by Chris, taking the next three games in a row to win the match 3-1.
Chris Fuller won and plays Gregoire Marche.

Leandro Romiglio vs Ben Coleman
This match was more a mental match. Both players were hitting the ball quite good, but it was Coleman who stayed more focused and patience in the long rallies. So Leandro's mistakes arrived, and with them he lost his focus on the game.
It wasn't easy for Ben, but he took the match by 3-0. Ben Coleman won and plays James Snell.

Marwan El Shorbagy vs Hugo Varela
Predictions said that this match should be quite comfortable for Marwan, but despite Hugo was tired from the match he played yesterday, he started playing at a very high pace and took an easy 5-1 lead, and then he keep the pace to get 10-5. Finally he took the game 11-9.
Marwan tried to control the pace of the game, playing some beautiful lobs, but the spaniard wanted a high pace and pushed himself to level the game at 6-6. But Marwan played a very good game tactically moving Hugo around the court, tiring him and waiting the mistakes. And they arrived. Marwan took the game 11-7.

Third and fourth game was more or less the same, and it was el Shorbagy who took them game again to gain a spot in the main draw.

We have to say that Hugo made a great tournament and is a junior to watch in the future of the squash. Marwan won and plays Borja Golán

Qualifying Round One:

Reiko Peter (ENG) vs Jaume Ramis (ESP)
Reiko was dominating the rallies from the start of the match. Jauem did his best, but the sixteen years old kid could do nothing agains the english player. Reiko won 3-0.

Marwan El Shorbagy (EGY) vs Carlos Cornes (ESP)
Fate wanted Marwan and Carlos to meet twice in a week (Canary Islands open and here), and despite Carlos played better than the last time, specially during the second game, he couldn't stand the pace of the egyptian player. So Marwan won the match 3-0

Jakob Dirnberger (AUT) vs Tomeu Llompart (ESP)
Tomeu made a good start leveling the game with Jakob from 1-1 until 5-5, the the rallies whre fast and it was the spaniard took the first game. Then Jakob paced up in the the second game tiring Llompart and mistakes arrived. In the end was Jakob who won the match 3-1

Leandro Romiglio (ESP) vs Tolo Pascual (ESP)
Leandro started quite good each game, and moved Tolo around the court, making him really tired. Tolo took a 6-0 lead in the third, and had four game ball at 10-6, but Leandro came back to take the  match 3-0.

Alejandro Garbi (ESP) vs Nico Hendry (ESP)
Alex made a string start and took the first game quickly, although Nico tried hard he couldn't withstand the pace of the game and let Alex go to the second round. Alex won 3-0

Chris Fuller (ENG) vs Toni Autonell (ESP)
One of the qualities of Chris is his strong lenght game, and he demonstrated it today as he played very solid. No mistakes from the englishman. Toni tried hard, but he never get used to the pace and could do nothing against Chris. Chris won 3-0

Ben Coleman (ENG) vs Hug Massuti (ESP)
Ben made Hug run a lot during the whole match. Hug made a very good first game playing some good lenghts and drops, but the englishman was too strong for him. Ben won 3-0

Johan Bouquet (FRA) vs Hugo Varela (ESP)
Johan had a bad start, he lost the first game 11-3. It seemed he was not really there. But in the second he started running more and getting into a good rhythm, he took advantage and won the second game. The third was very tight and had some good rallies, and this time was the spaniard who took the game to get a 2-1 lead. Fourth game started bad for the frenchman as he was 7-2 down, but he managed to get back into the game and climbed back to 9-9. An error from Johan gave Hugo a match ball, and the junior
from spain took the first match point to win his second match in PSA. Hugo won 3-1 making the first upset from the tournament.
