Spanish Open 2009
08-13 Dec, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, $8k

13-Dec:
Shuja wins Tenerife marathon

New Zealander Kashif Shuja clinched his first PSA World Tour squash title in Europe when he beat Scotland's Alan Clyne in a marathon final of the VX-Power Spanish Open, the $8,000 Super Satellite event at Centro Insular de Squash de Tenerife in Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

The Pakistan-born top seed reached the final without dropping a game - but the 30-year-old was soon put under pressure by Clyne, the 23-year-old third seed from Edinburgh who went two-games-to-one up, then led 6-2 in the fourth.

Shuja, a PSA Tour veteran since 1995, called upon all his experience to fight back to win the fourth - and then claimed the decider to record an impressive 11-7, 6-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8 title victory in 85 minutes.

The triumph marked the eighth Tour title of Shuja's career, but his first since November 2007.

12-Dec:
Clyne denies home finalist

Scotland's Alan Clyne disappointed the home fans in Santa Cruz when he came from a game down to beat local favourite David Vidal in the semi-finals.

Clyne's opponent in the final will be top seed Kashif Shuja, the Kiwi number one ending the run of qualifier Jose Facchini in straight games.

11-Dec:
Upsets abound in Santa Cruz

While it was a good day for the locals with two Spanish players - David Vidal and Alex Garbi - progressing to the quarter-finals, it was generally a night of upsets in the VX-Power Spanish Open as three qualifiers also made it through.

Qualifier Garbi scored an upset win over fifth seed Henrik Mustonen while seventh seed Vidal now beat Rory Pennell and now meets another English qualifier in Ben Coleman, who ousted second seed Jens Schoor in straight games.

Crowd favourite Jose Facchini also progressed from qualifying, beating eights seed Bart Ravelli in four games.

10-Dec:

Qualifying complete in Tenerife

It was a good day for the hosts in Tenerife as two Spaniards, Alejandro Garbi and Diego Lopez - qualified for the main draw, and Carlos Cornes getting the benefit of a lucky loser spot.

They're joined in the main draw by Italy's Jose Facchini and England's Ben Coleman, who both beat locals in their qualifying finals.

Qualifying Finals:
