Top seed Latasha Khan claimed her ninth WISPA title as she
came from a game down to beat Nicolette Fernandes in the final of
the Southwest Open in Phoenix.
15-Sep,
Quarters/Semis:
Fernandes joins Khan in Phoenix final
Top
seed Latasha Khan and fifth seed Nicolette Fernandes
both survived two matches on the third day of play to progress to
the final of the Southwest Open in Phoenix.
Khan's sternest test came in the morning as South Africa's Tenille
Van Der Merwe pushed the 7-time US champion in an hour-long
four-game battle, but having survived that Khan took less than half
the time to dispose of Canadian Miranda Ranieri - who had won a
75-minute quarter-final against Victoria Lust - in the semi-finals.
Fernandes
got the better of second seed Manuela Manetta in her quarter-final,
taking it in three games that still took 50 minutes to complete,
then came through an hour-plus five setter with Siyoli Waters to
reach the final.
For Khan this will be her 18th WISPA final, out of an amazing 133
events played, while Fernandes is a relative novice at this level,
having previously featured in just three finals. |
