16-May, Final
Blatchford bags
maiden title in Southport
Luke Butterworth reports
What a final we had at Southport.
Miranda Ranieri started off the brightest leading much of the first
game but them once winning the first game seemed to step back and
let Olivia Blatchford come at her, Olivia of course took the
opportunity to attack Ranieiri and took her canadian opponent by
suprise with some supreme front court attacking.
Olivia was up 2-1 when Ranieri started to attack once again, uses
her front court decpetion and change of pace to out play Blatchford
in the fourth game.
The fifth was neck and neck, all the way until the very last point.
It was a fitting end to a great tournament that two great players
battled it out on the court during the tiebreak having some
excellent exchanges of shotmaking both attacking and defensive play.
It looked as though Miranda had the match in the bag as a lose shot
from Olivia saw Miranda see an opening to win the tie only to see
her ball clip the top of the tin, from there it was Olivia who came
out on top after a great match ball rally ending in an unretrievable
boast from Olivia.
Everyone from the Fassp team thoroughly enjoyed the event, and
thanks went to all the staff and members at Southport for an
enjoyable weekend. It was great to see the Egyptian juniors come
across to play the Fassp Juniors, it was excellent experience and
hopefully another step in the right direction for the Fassp Juniors.
Olivia Blatchford this years champion, we're very much looking
forward to the next one!

15-May, Round One & Quarters
Top seeds in Southport semis
Luke Butterworth reports
Six
of the eight seeded players won through their first round matches at
Southport, the exceptions being qualifier Larissa Stephenson and
Mexico's Nayelly Hernandez, but both fell in the quarter-finals as
the top four seeds went through to the semi-finals.
Quarter-finals
Top
seed Suzie Pierrepont showed supreme strength to wear down
slow starting Larissa Stephenson. Larissa fought back to take the
third digging in and playing some neat short shots from mid court
out playing Pierrepoint. It was Pierrepoint's accuracy that pulled
it together to close out the fourth game.
Olivia Blatchford played fast out of the blocks taking the
first two games. An unfortunate collision forced a long blood injury
break for Samantha Cornett as she was caught above the eye by
Blatchford's racket. When play resumed in the fourth game, Samantha
had some game balls to take it to five, some great rallies and
tactical shots from both players, Blatchford came out victorious
with her trademark backhand drop being the winning shot.
Stephanie Edmison guaranteed a Canadian would make the final
as she set up a semi final with current Canadian national champion
Miranda Ranieri. Edmison's opponent Nayelly Hernandez looked
fatigued from her win earlier, with Stephanie playing at a high
intensity forcing the errors out of the Mexican.
Miranda Ranieri came out of her match with Thaisa Serafini
the victor with some swift attacking play to the front of the court
with good use of volley kills and volley drops. In the third Thaisa
looked to be coming back into the match with some tactical rallies
moving Ranieri around the court, but Ranieri stood strong to take
the game and move herself into the semis.

JUNIOR EXHIBITION
Faraz Khan beat
Yathreb Adel 3/1
Salma Hatem Youseff beat
Maria Elena Ubina 3/0
Faraz played some very quick attacking shots suprising young Yathreb
in the first two, Yathreb played very smart squash in the third with
some great exchanges of shotplay between the players, in the end it
was Faraz local Fassp Junior who came out the victor.
A fatigued Maria Elena from her wispa match looked out of sorts to a
very skillfull Salma Hatem Youseff the upcoming Egyptian junior, her
racket head speed and smooth footwork forcing Ubina to cover all
corners of the court.

slowed down and was able to close the game out and move to the
quarters.
Stephanie Edminson beat Nour Bahgat 11/13 11/13 13/11 11/7 11/8

Thaisa Serafini beat Maria Elena Ubina 12/10 12/10 11/6
Thaisa's experience was vital in this encounter againsst you Maria
Elena, very tight first two games could have gone either way with
some terrific shotplay for Ubina and safe and steady play for
Serafini. Experienced showed when Thaisa took the third to close the
match in 3.
Nayelly Hernandez beat Karie Heredia Gonzalez 8/11 11/4 11/7 11/6
This mexican battle looked as though it was going to be quite the
match after a exciting fast paced first game but it was Nayelly who
played smarter to take the match after losing the first to Karie.
Sam Cornett beat Garciela Lopez Perez 11/4 11/4 9/11 10/12 11/7
