04-Aug-11:
After 75 years Scottish
Squash
decides to invite the neighbours round!
Scottish Squash and Racketball clubs this week agreed to
initiate links between Scottish clubs and Squash Federations
throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.
Ron Pearman, chairman of SSRL said:
"We are obviously hugely excited about the opportunity the
2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow gives us to
showcase squash in Scotland. But we have eyes not only on
the Games. We would like to bring other World and European
events to Glasgow utilising the splendid world class
facilities being built for the Games at Scotstoun in
Glasgow.
"To make the most of any events we are now inviting our
clubs to twin with Squash Federations throughout the world.
We would like to organise events at the clubs where the
squash family from throughout the world will be invited to
play at our clubs, perhaps attend a function or two as well
as obviously attend the Games and other events as
spectators.
"We think this could be a lot of fun and we hope will lead
to long term relationships and even reciprocal visits in the
future. It will certainly add value to events and make a
contribution by way of economic impact.
"By making the decision now we have given ourselves the
necessary time to make the contacts and start planning and
extend a warm Scottish welcome to the worldwide squash
community."

This interesting initiative
comes appropriately as Scottish Squash celebrates 75 of
organised squash in Scotland – but as a future book will
show Scotland has a much longer tradition of squash.
Pearman
added: "There really is a great history of Squash in
Scotland and looking forward we are looking very strong
heading towards the 2014 Games.
"This week Alan Clyne the leading Scottish male entered the
world’s top 40 for the first time and Lisa Aitken,
Scotland’s leading lady is also rising fast in the rankings
despite carrying an injury.
"With Alan and Lisa on track and with some real depth in the
Scottish team we are hoping to give Scotland something to
cheer about at Scotstoun in 2014."
