Grant claims Santiago Success

After finishing as runner-up last year, England's Adrian Grant went one better in the 2010 Squash Santiago Open - Santiago City Trophy by winning title at the Central Area Shopping Center in Santiago de Compostela.

The top seeded Londoner faced Egypt's No2 seed Omar Mosaad - and, for the third time in the event, had to fight back from behind to overcome his opponent.

Mosaad, the world No17 from Cairo, took the opening game - but 30-year-old Grant, ranked just a single place higher, battled back to beat the 22-year-old Egyptian 6-11, 11-7, 11-7, 12-10 after 71 minutes.

The win takes Grant's career tally of Tour titles to 17 - one more than England team-mate Nick Matthew, the world No2, and more than any other Englishman on the Tour today.

19-nov-2010, Semis:
Grant & Mosaad To Contest Final

Top seeds Adrian Grant and Omar Mosaad reached the final of Squash Santiago Open - Santiago City Trophy in contrasting styles, Egypt's second seed Mosaad taking about a third of the time of English favourite Grant to come through the semi-finals of the at the Central Area Shopping Center in Santiago de Compostela.

Mosaad, the 22-year-old world No17 from Cairo, was in stunning form in the opening semi - despatching experienced Finn Olli Tuominen, the 31-year-old third seed from Helsinki, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 in just 24 minutes.

The success takes Mosaad into the 11th Tour final of his career - and the fourth of the year.

An all-Egyptian final seemed on the cards when unseeded Mohammed Abbas romped to a 2/0 lead over Adrian Grant, the world No16 from London who was bidding to reach the final for the second year in a row.

Abbas, a former world No13 from Giza, is fighting back to full fitness after a long layoff with a foot injury.

But the English left-hander refused to give up and raised his game to fight back against the Egyptian 29-year-old - finally, after 74 minutes, clinching an 8-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-6 victory.

The win, Grant's second fight back in the event from two games down, takes the 30-year-old into the 25th Tour final of his career - but his first since contesting the Santiago climax 12 months ago.

Borja Brought Down By Abbas

Spaniard Borja Golan's bid to win a second PSA World Tour title in two years in his home town ended today at the Central Area Shopping Center in the city of Santiago de Compostela when he was beaten by fellow non-seed Mohammed Abbas in the quarter-finals of the $31,175 Squash Santiago Open - Santiago City Trophy.

In a see-saw match lasting 72 minutes, it was Egyptian Abbas who finally prevailed 11-5, 3-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-8.

Both players are fighting back after injury layoffs - 27-year-old Golan, a former world No10, making his Tour comeback after knee surgery, and 29-year-old Abbas, a one-time world No13, bidding to rediscover his former form after a long-term foot injury.

Giza-based Abbas now lines up against top seed Adrian Grant, the 2009 runner-up from England who was extended for 45 minutes by Stephen Coppinger before beating the unseeded 26-year-old from Cape Town 11-5, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6.

There is Egyptian interest in the other semi-final where Omar Mosaad takes on Flying Finn Olli Tuominen. Mosaad, the second seed from Cairo, despatched Colombia's Miguel Angel Rodriguez 11-7, 11-7, 11-9 while Tuominen, the third seed from Helsinki, held off a stern challenge from eighth seed Arturo Salazar before beating the 22-year-old Mexican 6-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-5.

Home Hero Golan Makes
Santiago Quarters

Santiago squash star Borja Golan delighted his home town supporters by upsetting his fourth-seeded first round opponent in the Squash Santiago Open at the Central Area Shopping Center in Santiago de Compostela.

The 27-year-old former world No10, making his Tour comeback after knee surgery, defeated England's No4 seed Jonathan Kemp 11-9, 11-5, 11-13, 11-8 in 47 minutes. Kemp, the world No27 from Halifax, is also on a comeback trail after a hip operation in July.

Golan, the Santiago Open champion in 2008, now faces fellow unseeded opponent Mohammed Abbas, the former world No13 from Egypt who stunned England's sixth seed Tom Richards 6-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-8. Abbas, 29, is also battling to rediscover his former form after a long-term foot injury.

There was a further surprise in the top half of the draw where unseeded South African Stephen Coppinger dismissed Australia's seventh seed Ryan Cuskelly 5-11, 11-9, 11-1, 11-5.

The 26-year-old from Cape Town now lines up against England's Adrian Grant - but the top-seeded Londoner looked set to become the event's biggest casualty after losing the first two games to French qualifier Gregoire Marche.

But the experienced left-hander, ranked 16 in the world, reclaimed the upper hand before closing out the match 7-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-8 after 63 minutes.
