UK National Racketball Champs 2015
11-12 Jul, Edgbaston Priory, Birmingham
Sunday - Semis & Finals

Tim Vail retains the Ian Wright Memorial Trophy at the National Racketball Championships and takes over from Daryl Selby as the most decorated Mens Winner with 7 titles to his name.

Saturday Report

Men Main Draw
No real upsets in the Mens Main Draw as the majority of top seeds made it through to the Semi Finals, Defending Champ Tim Vail has cruised through without dropping a game while 2nd seed Ted Jeal has had a tougher start- a 3-0 against Adam Turner which was harder than it sounds and a 52 minute 3-1 victory over Josh Saysell. Jeal now faces 3/4 seed Dom Hamilton who got past Daniel Soar without too much trouble although Soar had previously had a 5 set 66 minute match with EPC’c coach Mike Edwards, Whilst Tim Vail faces 5/8 seed Luke Bishop who defeated 3/4 seed Oli Turner 3-1 in 50 minutes.

Mens O35
Paul Johnson currently leads this round robin group with 2 wins in 2 beating Dom Bird 3-0 and finishing the last match of the day with an incredible 3-2 victory over Ryan Loska in 65 minutes.

Mens O40
All the top seeds through to the SF with only one upset to the seedings as Matt Baker defeated Chris Port 3-0 in the Quarters. He now faces 2nd Seed Andy Wood who beat Brendon Bennett 3-0 while in the top half 3/4 James Powley takes on top seed Ian Cox after beating Chris Wase 3-0, Cox had the tougher QF as he defeated EPCs club coach Mike Harries 10-12, 12-10, 11-3, 11-9 in 40 minutes.

Mens O45
Top seed Mark Francis moves into the final fresh after he was awarded a walkover this evening. His SF opponent Simon Martin injured himself during his QF victory over Neil Counter and he unfortunately did too much damage to compete in the SF. Francis will come up against the winner of Adrian Murphy v Robert Hambrook after the defeated Fathi Seliman and Robert Hambrook in the quarters.

Mens O50
Top Seed Neil Baldwin faces 5/8 seed Paul Haigh in the SF, both have recorded relatively comfortable 3-0 victories on their way through so far, in the bottom half 3/4 John Cordeaux will take on 2nd seed Steve Wall after beating Darren Withey 3-0, Wall had a more difficult test after getting past Andy Heap with a score of 11-9, 11-5, 10-12, 11-9 in 33 minutes.

Mens O55
Warwickshires unseeded Collis Sheik seems to be taking home advantage in the O55’s as he has gone on a great run taking out two seeded players on his way to the SF’s. Firstly he knocked out 3/4 Nigel Millington 3-1 then beat 5/8 Keith Gristwood 3-0 in the quarters. He now faces the toughest challenge in the semis as he goes up against the top seed and defending champ Mike Phillips. In the bottom half 3/4 Peter Scott will take on the 2nd seed Chris Davey who had a tough 5 set quarter final against Mike English with a score of 14-12, 11-4, 8-11, 6-11, 11-2 in 46 minutes.

Mens O60
Rob Shay is on course to defend his title after a tough start in his quarter final match with Graham Cookson, Shay lost the first 11-13 but came back strong to take the game 3-1, he faces unseeded Andrew Mitchell who defeated 3/4 Roy Burns 3-1 in 31 minutes. The other semi final will see 3/4 Richard Waller go up against 2nd seed Ian Graham. Waller had to work hard for his spot as he took 43 minutes to record a 3-1 victory over Bill Mulholland whilst Graham looked strong in his quarter final against David Mudge who he got past 3-0 in just under 20 minutes.

Mens O65
Ian Graham also appears in the MO65’s and will play Graham Greensall in the O65 Semi final, Greensall defeating Roger Kenyon in the quarters 3-0 whilst Graham recorded the same scoreline against John Shingler. The bottom half has completely opened up with two unseeded players contesting a semi final as Robert Astbury knocked out 3/4 Peter Watt 3-0 and John Alderson defeated 2nd seed Graham Sayer 3-2 in 48 minutes.

Mens O70 and Mens O75
The Mens O70 RR was won by John Houghton in what was a really competitive group. John beat Peter Gwillym 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6 in 50 minutes then sealed the title with a brutal victory over Laurence Bates 11-7, 11-13, 8-11, 11-9, 14-12 in 54 minutes!

In the bottom half Beth John came from 2-1 down to defeat Sarah Roberton 3-2, she will now face 2nd seed Zoe Mellis who made her way into the Semi’s with a comfortable win over Judy McPherson, 3-0 in 12 minutes.

WO35
Natalie Lawrence already has one title in the bag this weekend as she won the O35 round robin with wins against Sarah Roberton (3-1) and Nikki Faux (3-0).

WO45
The WO45 RR looks tobe heading Bev Vatchers way if she can get past Tina Wotherspoon tomorrow.

WO50
The crunch match to decide the WO50 RR looks to be Rachel Woolford against Lesley Sturgess, both have recorded 3-0 victories against other opponents and the winner of this match will go into a really strong position to claim the title.

WO55
Paula Arrowsmith could wrap up this title with a win against Kirsty Crookson, Arrowsmith has already recorded victories over Lesley Sturgess and Frances Humphries, both 3-0.

WO60
The Womens O60 and O65 were combined into a group with the best overall O60 and O65 taking the titles, however Bett Dryhurst could claim both of them and add another title on an amazing record of 29 National Racketball titles with a victory over Connie Appelbe.
