English National Racketball Championships 2010
07-09 May, Edgbaston Priory and Birmingham University
Selby & Hill retain racketball titles

Daryl Selby (Essex) and Laura Hill (Derbyshire) both retained their Dunlop National Racketball titles in style at Edgbaston Priory.

Selby, the squash World No9 had coasted through to the final where he found squash legend Peter Nicol waiting for him. Nicol, playing in his first National Racketball event had earlier defeated David Campion (Yorkshire) in a tough semi final. It was the final everyone wanted and it thoroughly entertained the packed showcourt.

Selby got off to a flier and took the 1st 11-4 before Nicol found his rhythm and sneaked the 2nd 12-10 to level things up. Selby responded in great fashion to forge ahead once more and take a 2-1 lead. The 4th was extremely tight and included some monster rallies that never looked like they were going to end.

Nicol was always slightly down but it never the less had the look of a 5 setter and at 10-9 to Selby could have gone either way. In the end it was the Selby who managed to take it the 4th and with it claim his six title.

Laura Hill started this event as the red hot favourite to claim her sixth title and didn’t disappoint - winning without dropping a game. In the final she faced Lauren Selby (Essex). It was a competitive game and Lauren put up a good fight but Hill proved just too strong and ran out an 11-3, 11,7 11,5 victor.

ESR Operations Director Jim Lord (Yorkshire) retained both his Over 35 and 40 titles. The Over 35 final with Matt Baker (Devon) was a strange affair that kept swinging from one side to the other. However it was a hugely entertaining mach and in the end it was Lord who took control and retained his title.

No sooner had that match finished on the showcourt Lord headed onto one of the outside courts to tackle Rob Watkins (Avon) in the Over 40’s. Lord looked to be suffering and lost the first before rediscovering his touch and running out a comfortable 3-1 winner. Another great achievement for Jim Lord – claiming both titles.

Mike Phillips (Sussex) defeated Rob Shay (Warwickshire) in the Men’s Over 50 semi final before taking on Keith Palmer (Kent) in the final. Another very competitive final ensued with Phillips coming back after losing the first 11-6 to forge ahead 2-1. Palmer took his turn to fight back and take it into a decider which eventually went 11-9 to Phillips.

Steve Bateman (Bucks) won the Over 45 title with a 3-1 victory over Stephen Wall (Sussex). Ian Graham made it two Sussex winners with a 3-0 win over John Cockill (Yorkshire) in the Over 60 final. Warwickshire pair John Houghton and Anthony Thomas were victorious in the Men’s Over 65 and 70’s respectively.

Lesley Sturgess (Derbyshire) was clearly riled by her seedings (or lack of them!) and set out to prove a point. That she did in style taking both the Over 45 and 50 titles with 3-1 wins over Carolyn Lindsay (Warwickshire) and Jenny Matthews (Surrey).

Bett Dryhurst (Worcs) suffering with an injured knee played through the pain barrier to win the Over 60’s with victories over Rose Huish and Gill Wagner. Kathryn Milne took the Over 35 title while Bev Vatcher (Dorset) triumphed in the Over 40’s and Linda Smith (Devon) won the Over 60’s.

Selby & Nicol in Racketball final

The Dunlop National Racketball Championships reaches its climax later today at the prestigious Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham later today. Since Friday over 200 players from around the country have been fighting it out for the coveted National titles.

The Men’s Open has been eagerly awaited with squash legend Peter Nicol (Yorkshire) looking to upset the current Squash World No9 and five times National Racketball champion Daryl Selby (Essex). Selby has eased through the early rounds without incident and now faces Michael Robinson (Surrey) in this morning’s semi final. Meanwhile Nicol has had to fight hard and has dropped games against Mark Fuller (Northamptonshire) and Dominic Hamilton (Oxfordshire) on route to his semi final against England Squash & Racketball High Performance Coach David Campion. Campion has beaten Nicol before although that was in their first meeting.....and one of Nicol’s first ever games of Racketball! Since then the pair have had some fantastic battles but Nicol has taken at least the last 4 and must start as favourite.

In the Women’s Open reigning champion Laura Hill (Derbyshire) faces Lauren Selby (Essex) in the final. Hill is a seasoned Racketball player and reached the final with a comfortable 11-8, 11-4, 11-6 victory over Vicky Hynes (Warwickshire). Selby had to fight back after losing the first to defeat former European Under 19 squash champion Sarah-Jane Perry (Warwickshire).

The event includes a full range of age group categories from Over 35 up to Over 70’s. Jim Lord (Yorkshire) in looking good in his attempt to retain both the Over 35 and Over 40 titles. To achieve this he will have to stay on court most of the day with 2 semi finals this morning quickly followed by finals this afternoon. In the over 35’s Lord faces England Squash & Racketball colleague Pete Goodings (Northamptonshire) in the semi’s and then could meet another colleague Matt Baker in the final – ESR is taking this seriously!

Rob Shay (Warwickshire) won the Over 55’s last year but has dropped down to the Over 50’s this year – he lines up against Mike Phillips (Sussex) in the semi final.

Play starts at Edgbaston at 9.30am with the Men’s Open Final scheduled for 2.40pm.

Nicol to challenge champion Selby

Reigning champion and world no.9 Daryl Selby is looking to retain his title at the Dunlop National Racketball Championships between 7th – 9th May.

Selby, who has won the event five times will face stiff competition from former world no.1 and squash legend Peter Nicol, who is entering the event for the first time.

The two could meet in the final which would be a superb spectacle for the sport, in what promises to be the best championships yet.

Selby said: “I'm very much looking forward to playing in this year’s National Racketball Championships. I believe this year will yet again see a record number of entries which shows the increasing popularity of the game.

“For me it's a way of still running around on a court but without the pressures that squash and the PSA world tour brings. This therefore means I can really relax and enjoy it.”

Nicol, who has only recently taken up racketball, is relishing the chance to play in his first national championships: “I’m excited to compete for the first time and am looking forward to taking on the current top ranked players. I’ve been in training for a while now and will be peaking for the Championships.

“The event itself has grown dramatically over the past couple of years and the weekend should be hugely competitive but also a lot of fun, he said.”

Selby will be entering as favourite but Nicol still has the quality to push him all the way, “I would like to think I could beat him but I’m maybe asking a little too much of myself, we’ll see!” commented Nicol.

“It’s a great sociable weekend, and hopefully I can win another title but I'm sure there will plenty of guys trying to shoot me down. Either way, win lose or draw, many calories will be burnt, many laughs will be had and a few pints will be sunk in the bar afterwards,” added Selby.
