Schweertman wins
Q-sourcing Trophy
Tommy Berden reports
Piedro Schweertman claimed the second PSA title of his career in
convincing fashion today after seeing off the strong and spirited
challenge of French prospect Lucas Serme in the final of the
Q-sourcing Squash Trophy 2010.
The
26-year old Dutch favourite powered his way through to the climax of
the satellite event in the Dutch city of Barendrecht without
dropping a game, disposing of English duo Alex Ingham and Mark
Fuller, as well as Egypt’s Ali Farag in straight games. 18-year old
Serme at the other hand came through qualifying and three tough main
draw matches against Andre Haschker (3-1), Rene Mijs (3-0) and
Sebastiaan Weenink (3-2) to reach his maiden PSA final.
The final was played at a furious pace with Schweertman taking the
early advantage. From half way the first, the young Serme steadied
and matched his more experienced opponent shot for shot for the
remainder of the match. However it was Schweertman who proved more
decisive at the end of each game, eventually running away with a
hard fought 11-8, 12-10, 11-8 victory.
Schweertman’
second ever PSA tournament win marks the third PSA title success of
a Dutch player in a week, after both Laurens Jan Anjema and Dylan
Bennett registered wins in respectively Canada and Peru earlier in
the week. The 52.5 world ranking points will take the Dutchmen into
the top-100 for the first time in his career in next month’s PSA
World Ranking.

Schweertman and Serme
to contest Q-sourcing final
Tommy Berden reports
Piedro Schweertman and Lucas Serme moved into today’s final of the
Q-sourcing Squash Trophy 2010 after both players recorded
contrasting victories at Squashcentrum Barendrecht in the
Netherlands.26-year old Schweertman, the
tournament favourite, cruised through to the climax of the PSA
Satellite event in the Dutch city of Barendrecht, completely
outplaying Englishmen Mark Fuller from the word go. Fuller tried to
match the speed of the Dutch top seed, but came up short on almost
every occasion. Schweertman never led up the pressure, eventually
winning 11-6, 11-3, 11-2 in 28 minutes.
17-year old Serme however had to battle hard for 65 minutes to see
off Dutch wildcard Sebastiaan Weenink in a high quality match. The
23-year old resident of The Hague took a 2-0 lead in games, but
eventually succumbed to the speed and fitness of his extremely
gifted French opponent, who went one better then his older sister
Camille, who lost out to English star Jenny Duncalf in yesterday’s
semi final of the Chennai Open.
Sunday’s final of the Q-sourcing Squash Trophy 2010 will commence at
5pm. It will be the first time that Schweertman and Serme will meet
on the PSA World Tour.

Dutch duo burst into
Q-sourcing semis
Tommy Berden reports
The semi finals of the Q-sourcing Squash Trophy 2010 in the Dutch
city of Barendrecht will feature two Dutch players, an Englishmen
and a talented French junior.
Piedro Schweertman was the first player to move into Sunday’s
semis. The 26-year old Dutch ace proved too strong for the young and
extremely talented Egyptian Ali Farag who stunned the home crowd on
numerous occasions with beautiful shots. The physical strength and
all court play of the top seed made the difference though at the end
of each closely contested game with Schweertman running away with a
hard fought 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 win over his much younger opponent.
Schweertman now meets eight seeded Mark Fuller from England
who overcame a one game deficit and a spirited performance by higher
ranked Israeli Ido Avron to reach tomorrow’s semi final: 7-11, 11-8,
11-4, 11-6.
The second semi final will be contested by Lucas Serme and
Sebastiaan Weenink. Serme, a 17-year old qualifier from France,
ousted ‘local hero’ Rene Mijs in straight games (11-6, 13-11, 11-7)
causing a second successive upset after defeating the experienced
Andre Haschker from Germany earlier in the day in four.
23-year old Weenink, playing his first PSA tournament, showed
immense mental strength in his quarter final match with English
qualifier Andrew Birks. The skilful Dutch international, who turned
pro only six weeks ago after completing his university degree,
looked down and out at several times in the match, but the citizen
of The Hague kept fighting hard, surviving three match balls en
route to a 11-8, 8-11, 10-12, 11-9, 14-12 victory.
