28-Feb-11:
Wade Johnstone takes
PST Baltimore Open title
Wade Johnstone beat Mohamed El Sherbini 11/7, 11/5,
11/5 to win the 2011 Baltimore Open Championship on the
US-based Pro Squash Tour (PST).
Johnstone lives in Baltimore and is a touring pro in
residence at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club. Sherbini makes
his home in Alexandria, Egypt and is a rising star on the
world stage. He travelled to the U.S. to compete in PST
tournaments. This day, however, belonged to Johnstone.
The 42 minute match featured both players covering all
corners of the court with fantastic intensity. The match
opened with an intense Johnstone, who is sponsored by Prince
Sports, taking a 6-0 lead.
Sherbini took a long walk to the back wall, sighed deeply,
turned around and won the next three rallies. The 19 year
old Egyptian shows masterful control and mixes his tempo
like a mature veteran. Sherbini brought the match back to
7-8. However, Johnstone found three winners to close out
game one.
Game two opened with renewed intensity. Sherbini was
conceding nothing. As the play became more physical, both
players appealed to the referee for decisions. Locked at
5-5, Johnstone began to attack more agressively and mixed in
lobs with aggressive drop shots. Sherbini, caught wrong
footed a few times lost the next six rallies and the game
11-5.
Game 3 opened with Johnstone again jumping to an early 4-1
lead. He looked to be in solid control when Sherbini was
able to find several nicks that delighted the crowd. With
the game close at 6-5, Johnstone again went on a run to
close out the game 11-5.
Johnstone, 29, is playing the best squash of his career. In
the prior week he reached the Championship of the National
Capital Open. Earlier in the season, he reached the
semi-finals of two PST tournaments. Frustrated with these
finishes, he changed trainers and targeted his physical
regimen.
Johnstone was playing the tournament with a heavy heart,
having lost a close friend during the week. Prior to the
Championship match, Johnstone released a statement, saying:
"A good friend, a great man, a loving husband and father,
Peter Golueke passed away on Monday after a fight with
cancer, leaving behind his wonderful family, Val, Erin,
Brandon, Chris & Geoff
Golueke. He will be missed by all that knew him.
"In honour of Peter's life, Wade would like to dedicate his
match today to the Golueke family and to donate his prize
money to the Foundation that helped Peter during his
illness."
In the third place match Patrick Bedore beat
Mohamed Nabil 11/2, 11/9, 9/11, 14/12. Bedore,
originally from Canada is the new Head Squash Pro at the
Baltimore Country Club. Nabil makes his home in Alexandria,
Egypt and is a touring pro on the Pro Squash Tour.
